This is the second notebook cooler that I have purchased - the first was a flat model that cost about half the price and works just great. The main difference between that one and this is the typing angle the unit puts your laptop into. This one has a "speed control" - not needed - If you have to have the "top of the line" (or just pay extra for everything you buy) then buy this item. If not then purchase a cheaper model and prop it up with a couple of pink erasers for the typing angle. One last thing - the fans are just as loud as my cheaper unit - at whatever "speed" you set it at. Hope this helps.
super quiet and great deal
I got a macbook 13" and my fan kept going crazy whenever I played some games on it. Since there's only one fan inside the macbook, it would constantly be running at full RPM in order to keep the laptop cool, even though it would keep getting hot.
I finally purchased this since I didn't want my macbook breaking and it works wonders. It's really quiet, even at high speed, so there's no high pitch fan noise.
The performance is outstanding and my macbook fan no longer needs to go crazy. I feel very secure and confident that this Zalman cooler will not only keep my macbook cool at all times, but it'll also improve it's life time.
Pros: Quiet, extra USB on the cooler, on/off button, fan controller, super quiet, elevated for easier keyboard support, great design, did i mention it's quiet?, perfect fit
Cons: I think it could be slightly thinner, not very easy to carry around, can't be used on your lap, and it's somewhat pricey.
all in all, I'm very happy and recommend it to all! Especially macbookers
Notebook cooler very helpful
Before I start my review let me make one thing very clear, this is in no way shape or form necessary for your laptop. If you have a more recent laptop, chances are that your laptop is capable of cooling just fine on its own. Moving on:
This laptop cooler is great. It works wonders. I personally own a MacBookPro 15" widescreen. The only visible issue is that the laptop hangs off the sides about half an inch per side.
But other then that this is a great item to have on your desk. Its also
great to use if you will be on an uneven surface like a bed or carpet. I would not recommend having this on your lap though because itmay cause discomfort which is the only downside I see.
I can easily use this bad boy and drop my temp 10*+ C. I do some gaming so my laptop tends to run hot. Of course my fans are very capable of doing the same if I crank up the RPM by the thousands. It comes with a dial on the side so you can turn up or down the fans and the speeds vary quite a bit providing you with the power to monitor your own cooling process. I usually turn up my fan to max if I see my laptop getting to the 60*C+ mark (which isnt that bad but why let it run hotter then it needs to?)
But let me put it like this. If you have a 1976 ford truck and a new ferrari, and you have to drive everyday, which one do you put the miles on? I'd save my Rrari for the weekends. So I leave my fans on low becuase I know during school I won't be lugging this cooler around with me but I wont mind my fans will be in good shape in case I have to turn them up a level.
Another upside is that even at the highest setting, it is barely audible. Sounds like your A/C vents in the backround. I'm pretty sure its not even as loud as your built in fans when they are actually running at a noticeable RPM. It does not use much battery power either.
Hooks up to your laptop via USB. But to make up for it the cooler itself has 2 USB ports so you lose 1 but gain 2.
In conclusion, if you would like to invest in your laptops survivability and extend its new-like condition, then this is for you. But as I said this is reccomended for the heavier users who have their systems running hot due to demanding programs (gaming, video-making, auto cad, etc.).
Opinion- It is worth the money for the benefits you can attain through having this product. Cool laptop = happy me.
Excellent laptop cooler
The Zalman NC-1000 is a great laptop cooler. What some of the pictures fail to capture is how solid it is. Made of aluminum, it is very rigged and just feels like it's quality. It keeps my laptop much cooler (the laptop's fan never kicks in, even when I'm doing something graphic intensive like watching a blueray or playing a computer game).
The cooler is powered by a USB connection. Don't worry, you don't lose any USB ports because the cooler has a free USB connection that you can plug a peripheral into if you're maxed out on USB ports.
When considering the cost of the cooler, bear in mind that keeping your laptop cool will ultimately make it last longer, put less stress of the graphics card, motherboard, processor, and ram, meaning less likelihood of failures. The $50 you spend on this cooler might save you hundreds in repair costs.
If your laptop runs hot, or if you do any photo or video editing, gaming, or watching higher resolution video, get yourself one.
Best for 15" notebooks and smaller
This cooler is all aluminum on top, so it can help conduct heat somewhat even if it's off. The bottom of it is plastic and if the laptop I'm using is small enough, it's possible to use it in my lap if I arrange it so my legs aren't blocking the two fan holes on the bottom of the cooler. For a laptop with a hot bottom (like one of those all aluminum ones), it would definitely be more comfortable than the laptop alone. However trying to use it in your lap doesn't work well with a 17" laptop.
The fans blow upward, and I don't think there is a way to reverse them. Since none of my laptops take in air from the sides and blow downwards, this works OK for me. The cooler's fans are practically inaudible at low speeds, and even on high speed they aren't very loud.
I wish Amazon sold the larger size. My 17" laptop is a little big for the NC1000 and the holes on top of the cooler don't cover a large enough area. On my 17" laptop, the holes for its fans are near the rear of the laptop and the holes on the cooler don't extend that far up. The cooler is fine for my smaller laptops though.
Since I'm not into extreme gaming, my laptop temperatures haven't gone down that much. The laptop fans tend to kick in and cool the laptop sufficiently even without the cooler. Where this cooler would really make a difference would be with a gaming laptop where the laptop fans aren't quite adequate during demanding parts of the game -- especially if the gamer likes to overclock and is pushing their laptop's cooling system past what it was designed to handle.
It's really nicely made, and though I'd rather not have to pay so much for a laptop cooler, the quality makes it worth it to me.
