tosiba HD A2
i bought this dvd player thinking that it would create good sound and picture but it was not upto my expectation. the picture look good on 16:9 ratio but i could not zoom it to see in full screen of my 50 plasma tv. i could only zoom when i change the resolution to 480i or 480p. so whats the point of having HD if you cant see full screen. now iam gonna have to buy a tv that lets zoom 720, and 1080p resolution. otherwise i might have to buy a projector. if hd dvd and hd tv are fully compatible then this dvd is awesome

Just Spectacular...NOT Does not work out of the box
Don't believe the fanboyz and techno fanatics!
Does not work out of the box.
Requires extensive setup.
Payoff is negligible.
Toshiba does not send you the bonus HDDVDs.
HD is a dieing format.
My previous detailed review was deleted....I wonder why? Don't like negative reviews?
HD-DVD even more doomed. Target and Blockbuster go exclusively blu ray. Doh!
I still have not received my bonus HD DVDs. What the ?
Fan-boys please go away and quit hyping this problem player.

not impressed
1. Takes more than 30 seconds to boot
2. The GUI for changing date/time is non-intuitive. Expects you to enter dates and times with the numeric keypad, but does not tell you that on the screen.
3. The internet connection is useless. I expected to be able to get a web browser to control the device by, or be able to query its status via SNMP or something. But it does nothing of the sort. It appears to only be useful to update the firmware and limit my choices using DRM.
4. There is no way to select NTP servers in the network setup; they are hard-coded and cannot be set from DHCP. Lose in today's NAT'ed world.
5. The stupid box refused to oversample a regular DVD without an HDMI cable.
I can only hope that future revisions of the firmware will address some of these issues.

1080i is not true high definition
The majority of HD DVDs support 1080P resolution. Which is a much smoother picture than 1080i. Although they have the same dimensions in pixels, please understand that interlaced (1080i) provides a lot of "flicker" when watching any scene with a lot of motion.
The HD-DVD player is garbage if you plan to watch any action movies.
Don't waste your money on this fake HD player, you're better off waiting for a better deal to come by.
Also note that this item has dropped $400 in price in about 8 months, partially due to its unreliable hard ware.

This is actually a rating on Amazon more than the dvd player
When an item drops from $240 down to $140 in 2 months you would expect some kind of relief from a company like Amazon. Especially given the fact you have purchased 60 items plus over 2-1/2 years time. All I got from customer no service was I sorry I cannot do anything about it. Oh well there are other places to spend my money that want to make their customers happy. So long Amazon.
