Compact and versatile : a great micro system.

(5 out of 5) by V. Liew on Jan 18, 2007 (Vancouver, BC Canada)
Kudos to Onkyo for making a micro system that actually has multiple input and outputs! (These days, just about every mini/micro system out there only has a mini-jack input and output on the front of them... which is just stupid.) I currently have it connected to a TV and a small subwoofer - basically, I'm using it as a mini-receiver. It makes TV and DVD viewing so much more enjoyable and it doesn't take up very much space.

The speakers that come with this system are only of slightly above average quality. That's not a big problem, because one can always hook up a higher quality set of speakers to it. I've tried a set of Athena bookshelf speakers and now a set Cambridge Soundworks satellite speakers. The sound quality with these speakers is just amazing! Also, don't let the 20 watt rating of its amp discourage you. Its has the power to go more than loud enough.

Minor gripe : Onkyo also has the CS-515 which adds an additional set of RCA inputs & outputs, a higher quality DAC, an RDS radio, and various other improvements. Problem is that they sell it in Europe and Asia but not in North America. So in a way, I feel a little cheated knowing there's better model out there, yet I can't buy it. :\

Quality, Value & Awesome Sound

(5 out of 5) by Lauren McCaffery on Jan 15, 2007 (Mobile, Alabama USA)
I have owned Onkyo products since the early 80s and was always satisfied with the quality. My older Onkyo components are pretty large compared to the more compact versions of today and I wanted something that I knew was tried and trusted but didn't take up so much room. This receiver and CD player are the perfect size and the sound quality is just as good as my neighbor's Bose. My new Onkyo is heavy and well-constructed. Being electronically challenged for many years, I was very pleased to find that it was so simple to connect the receiver to the speakers and also connect the FM and AM antennae. It comes with a remote control and I found it easy to program and preset all the radio stations. Everything is user friendly. I loved the fact that is has a sleep timer and a bass boost on it as well. The CD sound is crisp and clear. This system is worth every penny.

Not as good as I hoped

(2 out of 5) by Paul from Washington on Aug 4, 2007 (Seattle, WA USA)
This unit does not have the clean and clear sound that I hoped. The adjustment of bass and treble could not achieve a good EQ overall. The volume limit is also relatively low. I have owned the Yamaha MCR series and this does not compare to those systems in terms of sound quality, rounded sound, volume or ability to drive nice headphones. After six months I decided to buy another Yamaha.

very nice

A good sounding no frills shelf system. If you are not one who requires ear bleeding volume this will work fine for you even in a good sized room. Sound quality is very good.

Excellent unit

(4 out of 5) by HUSCOS on Jun 18, 2007
I purchased this early this year from Amazon - I think the unit came from Vanns, which was fine.

I use it in my office, which is in a basement. I had returned a Philips unit because of horrible reception. This one does the job. Plus the CD plays MP3s so I just burned a disk with a few hundred songs and never have to do a thing. Very satisfied.
