Crash Course in Detectors

(5 out of 5) by Adam J. Russo on Jan 12, 2008 (Haddam, CT)
To make this very simple, police generally use two types of devices to catch your speed. Larger law enforcement departments use a laser to read the speed that you are going. Laser has to be pointed in between both headlights and the officer must have line of sight of your vehicle. They are more accurate, and aren't picked up by any detector unless the officer pulls the trigger on his laser gun. They are more reliable in court because it is almost impossible for the laser gun to pick up another cars speed next to you. FACT is that generally when the laser detector already picks up the gun, the officer already has your speed.

In the world of radar detectors. A lot of police favor this type of device for a majority of reasons. He can just sit down in his cruiser and turn on the radar (which reads in BOTH directions for most newer models) and relax with the radio on until it picks up a car doing an unreasonable speed. Myth is that radar can only detect in a straight line. Fact is that is easily goes around corners and picks up cars before the officer ever sees that vehicle. Your radar/laser detector will easily pick up this device since it is projecting a field that can easily be picked up. Another myth is that radars can't be used when the officer is driving, they can, and are used in this fashion regularly.

But when it comes down to it. Police generally want you to own a radar/laser detector. WHY? It allows you to focus more attention on the road, and makes you look enough distance ahead of you to avoid an accident without the constant distraction of looking for cops.

Works Great!

Yeah i bought this thing and i have to say i was pleasantly surprised with its accuracy for the price. I was driving around town and it alerted me about a cop car sitting in a parking lot just watching the road with his VG-2 on, definantly gave me enough time to slow down... good buy

Junk, save up and buy a real one

First off, let me say that giving this radar detector one star is one star too much.

When I got this detector I thought it was the greatest thing ever (What a fool I was!). I used it on a 6 hour road trip to and from and it picked up EVERYTHING. Now, 4 months later, the thing doesn't work. Now I know some cops don't keep their radar on when they are driving... But EVERY cop and every police station I've passed in the last 4 months must be on a radar strike or this thing simply does not work (Oh, and I pass two police stations every day going to work also... so 4 times per day if you count the whole commute)... PLUS I got a photo radar ticket on the highway!!! The thing never went off!!! Need I say anything more?

But that's not the only feature this wonderful device has! The compass is truly a remarkable thing. Using this detector, I have found out that I do not live South West from my place of work... I live NORTH from it... Oh, and when I drive back home it's the weirdest thing... I should be going South, right? But no... I still go NORTH!!! In fact, everywhere I go I always seem to be driving NORTH in my car. It's quite comical. I've felt like throwing the thing out of my window so many times that I had to just quit using it. Where I live, everything is NESW. I get a little irate at it when I'm heading South and the thing NEVER changes from North. I've reset the thing countless times, too. My iPHONE is a far better compass than this waste of material. Hmmm, maybe I can even download a radar app for my phone for free?

The point is this: I will never buy a Cobra again. Waste of $50 plus $180 for my ticket. $49.99 too much if you ask me. I could have used that $230 towards a REAL radar detector.

Please learn from my mistake and buy a real detector.

useless for laser detection

I had it for couple years now, and just last month it picked up laser gun on a highway for the first time, it was kinda late response, I saw police couple seconds earlier anyway.
I see cops on highways with lasers I guess all the time, but no response from this radar.
May be they use some kinda knew ones.
K and Ka signals range also no good.
