I bought this notebook new in 2005 and it's been used gently around the house with minimal mobile use. The DVD drive died while in warranty and getting HP to replace it involved many hours of arguing with their overseas support people. Their solution to the dead DVD drive was to reformat the hard drive (I refused). They agreed to send me a new drive, but said I'd have to pay for it if that didn't fix my problem. Of course, it did fix my problem. The wireless adapter failed a couple of months ago and I replaced the wireless card, to no avail. Finally ended up with a wireless plug-in card. Today we noticed that the plastic case behind the LCD display has large cracks from flexing where the hinges are. Maybe all this is normal for laptops - don't know as this was my first. The biggest drawback to this unit is the extremely glossy screen. Using it anywhere near a window or bright lights is an exercise in futility. Why all notebook screens aren't of the anti-glare matte finish is a mystery to me.

After buying a second HP laptop a year or so ago, we've decided that HP support is practically non-existent and unless you're up to replacing parts yourself you might want to consider a different brand (or maybe they're all that way?)

I have owned this notebook since Jan.2006 and as a business owner, with no time for defective equipment,
this notebook has never caused me a bit of trouble.

Performs very well, dependable, always provides me with exeptional service.

One side note, I wouldn't pay [...]for it though.

This notebook is excellent! The mobile pentium processor gives you excellent battery life and the Hi Defintion monitor is a great extra. The widespread keyboard gives you comfort for typing,and the easy to use pad mouse helps when browsing the internet. The Hp dv series was awarded pc of the year by pc magazine.
