Well designed, well made, easy to adjust

(5 out of 5) by Brian Goetz on Apr 2, 2007 (Williston, VT USA)
I bought one of these to hold up a Dell 2407 24" widescreen monitor, and it works great. The unit is sturdy and well-made, comes with a wide range of mounting hardware for various monitor types, and is very easy to adjust. You can adjust height, horizontal position, distance to monitor, tilt, viewing angle, and swivel (landscape/portrait). When you first install it, you have to set the tensions for the weight of your monitor, but once that is done, positional and rotational adjustments are easy and it holds in place stably even for fine adjustments.

Ergotron makes a number of variants of this model, including one with two monitor arms, and one with a laptop tray. Even though the two-monitor version appears to be the same thing with an extra arm, you can't buy the extra arms or other accessories separately, so make sure you order what you want the first time.

Another commenter asked about the rated weight -- the specs say "monitors up to 20lb", and it certainly does a nice job with my 24" monitor.

The deskside mount needs a good beefy edge to grab on to, so if your desk doesn't have a lot of overhang in the back, you might have trouble installing it (though there are adapters provided for screwing it to the desk.) There are also wall-mount versions.

One slight nit is that if you type hard, the vibration is transmitted through the desk to the mount, and with a large monitor, can cause it to shake slightly, which is a little disconcerting at first. I suspect this is much less of a problem with either a more sturdy desk (I've got it attached to a riser on top of the desk) or a smaller monitor.

Would definitely buy this unit again.

Worth the Money

(5 out of 5) by E. Tucker on Nov 26, 2006 (Colorado)
I was a little hesitant buying this without trying it but I thought the other review, and the fact that this brand/model seems to be carried widely, was a good reference.
I love it!.
I wear no-line bi/tri focals and with normal monitor screen heights on my desktop I was always tilting my head backward in order to view the screen. This lead to a stiff neck a lot of times. (Yes, setting the monitor back a couple of feet would work too, but by then the print is so small one would need a larger monitor, and that becomes expensive quickly.)
With this mount I have the bottom of my 19" widescreen Viewsonic LCD monitor right on my desk in front of my keyboard. My neck feels better already! If on occasion I need the desk space the monitor swings up and out with only a couple of fingers worth of force.
The mount comes with adjustments for lifting force and frictional (sideways) force. It also comes equipped with an optional screw-in desktop mount. In my case the clamp mount is perfectly adequate. In fact as I tighened the clamp I was impressed that I could not do any sliding of the mount sideways. It is a nice design.
This is well worth the money.

Very Useful - Works Great

(5 out of 5) by Gadget Man on Sep 18, 2006 (California)
I have a back problem that necessitates that I stand up fairly often, since my back can be painful if I sit too long. This Ergotron is a Godsend. It works perfectly, is easy to assemble and gives you lots of viewing options. I'm able to view the monitor while sitting. Then when I stand, the Ergotron allows me to lift and tild the monitor so I can continue working. Highly Recommended.

Monitor arm

(5 out of 5) by Peter Zeischegg on Feb 16, 2007 (Nevada City, Ca USA)
after looking around for a while - I decided to give this a try. Well, it surpasses my expectaations. It clears my desk, all of a sudden I have space!!! Adjustable in any imaginable direction. Simply awesome.
I then added the Atlas book stand - no more neck strain when reading, typing, studying.

I ordered both for my wife as well - she loves them.

Great for crowded desks

(5 out of 5) by Shawn J. Lim on Nov 6, 2007 (Austin, TX, USA)
The only reason I was considering this stand was because my generic brand 22" monitor came with a very, very lame one. I was very hesitant to buy this cause I thought it would be extreme overkill. It would be over 75% of the cost of my monitor... I couldn't believe what I had done when I finished Amazon's checkout process... Now, three months later, I'm getting another one for my mom for use at her workplace.

As I mentioned earlier, this holds my 22" LCD (EMPREX brand if you're wondering) monitor very nicely. The monitor is about 17 Lbs and even small adjustments feel very tight. I am a full time student and frequently need to move my monitor out of the way to make room for my studies since I only have one desk for everything I do. Now I have the option of quickly pushing it all the way against my wall or raising it up above my papers. The area taken by the old stand is now free which is very liberating.

I also program quite a bit and it's really nice to put my monitor very low and right behind my keyboard so I'm not always moving my head up and down trying to see what special keys I'm hitting. I've probably saved a dozen headaches by doing this. The last thing this stand lets me do is angle, raise, and extend my monitor towards my bed (which is to the right of my desk). This way I can lay down to watch a DVD or sit to play some xbox 360 with my friends.

Everyone who has seen this makes a comment about how nice it is. It's a good investment for college students who have limited desktop space and only one monitor for everything they do (computer, cable TV, DVD, consoles).

Another reviewer said he doesn't like the cable management system. I'll agree that it's not the best in the world. The plastic retainers feel flimsy and you have to bend up your cables quite a bit to get them to fit. However, I ended up using it and I think it's sufficient/necessary if you move your monitor around a lot. I have three thick cables weaving through the plastics (power, DVI for computer, VGA for xbox) and so far it's been working very well for me.
