Color's fading? It might not be the cartridge

(5 out of 5) by S. Geist on Feb 29, 2008 (San Francisco, CA United States)
If your printer's color is starting to fade, (especially reds and magentas) and you're thinking the cartridge is running low, it might actually be the printer is dirty internally. Unfortunately, the cleaning process is intricate and not a do-it-yourself task. What's going on is dust has settled on the lenses and mirrors in the laser scanning unit. My sources at HP tell me this is a "dirty little secret" with the 1600 and 2600-series printers and that you'll probably need to have it cleaned every 18 to 24 months depending on how dusty your area is.

I'm telling you this in a review for toner as this cartridge is used in the affected printers. Five stars for being a high-quality product that's not going to leak toner on you like some off-brand refilled cartrige might.

Correction on cartridges

(4 out of 5) by H. Wu on Jul 18, 2007 (San Francisco, CA)
The HP1600 ships with starter cartridges. Definitely not a good value.

The 2600 and 2605 models ship with full cartridges. Yes, replacement set of all four is equal to or exceed price of a new printer. Keep an eye out for specials at the big box office stores; Ive seen the 2605dn go for as little as $300.

I have both 2600n and 2605dn. The built-in networking works like a charm, though be sure to get the latest firmware and software updates. For the little bit extra money, the 2605dn is the better way to go. Much faster, built in duplexing, can accept extra printer RAM (which I installed very easily).

Package deal cost more than individual cartridges combined!!!

(3 out of 5) by S. Damon on Feb 17, 2008 (New York, NY United States)
According to the above info, the costs of the the individual cartridges are:

The MSRPP for the black cartridge is $74.99, and for the color ones is $82.99 each. That's a total of $323.96. So why is the price of the 4 cartridge set $340.99?????????

It costs HP less to package, store and ship an entire set yet they charge more? Same for the retailer; it costs them less to store and ship the sets. So why is the consumer paying extra? If anything, companies usually give discounts when you buy package deals.

Save yourself $17 and buy the individual cartridges as needed!

Only the best

(5 out of 5) by Edward Pulaski on Nov 11, 2008 (Colorado)
I had purchased the off-brand replacement cartridges trying to save some money. (They cost about 2/3 as much as the HP ones.) After a little while all of my prints started coming out with streaks. Installing HP cartridges immediately solved the problems. I tried to save a little money and spent a lot more.
