Nice concept, but poor product quality

Our local warehouse club was closing these little units out, with a great price of less than $30 for the radio, car kit and home kit, plus a remote. It was too good of a price to ignore.

I picked up one of the units, and got it installed in less than 10 minutes. I got the service activated, and it worked quite well.... for about 24 hours. After the first day, the radio would completely lose its memory of all station presets and revert to the standard non-subscriber channel of 184.

Well... this wouldn't work, so I took the unit back and exchanged it for a second unit of the same kind. After installation, I was quite happy that everything seemed to be working.... until the next day, when again the unit completely lost its mind and lost all preset frequencies and would revert to channel 184 everytime I would turn off the car.

Now, let me say, that for the 24 hours the unit worked, it seemed quite good. The built in FM transmitter easily could be heard over local noise, and the signal was clear and clean.

However, given that there was obviously a problem, I tried to call the manufacturer, XACT. Well.... they do have an 800 number, but there is nothing but pre-recorded help messages. You can't get to an operator, and there is no live customer service!! In other words, no support.

So, this second one went back to the store, and I've picked up a completely different unit, the InV. It seems OK so far, but the FM transmitter in this new unit is weak, and even using the FM extender antenna, works marginally. I would only recommend an installation if you can directly feed audio into your car's stereo system.

Well, there's my two cents.... nice radio, but poor construction and no customer service from the manufacturer. You'd be best to find something else.

Super easy to install if you have a cassette deck. Great sound quality!

After calling Sirius-XM to activate this Xact receiver, I put the antenna inside my car -- I just set the end of the antenna behind the back seat, under the rear windshield. Then I bought a Phillips cassette adaptor for $9 at Walmart, put that in my car's cassette player and then plugged it into this Xact receiver. Now my car stereo plays satellite radio that is so clear it sounds like a recording! There's no static at all. Very simple and I definitely recommend this option as a cheap way to get satellite radio in your car if you have a cassette player on your car's stereo.

Big Sound, Little Package

(4 out of 5) by E. Morales on Oct 13, 2009 (Arizona)
Bought a car that was set up for Sirius, so installation meant plugging in the existing wires. An investigation was required. Found this unit cheap and activation was painless. If there was a drawback, "A La Carte" was unavailable on this unit. Instead they offered me their "Everything" Service Package, limited to 160 channels by the unit, for $4.99 a month. Boom, a wide variety of programing was available. Has worked flawlessly, have only lost the signal under bridges. Have really enjoyed the service.

P.S.
Just be aware there is a hefty Early Cancel Charge with all the Service Packages. It's only for the first term of service, done away with after that. Figured if I can't afford $4.99, I've got major problems already.

Excellent value for this type of product. I use this version as part of a house wide sound system since it doesn't need to be accessible. If your looking for a "smart looking" version, this is not it, look at the Starmate or other color versions.
