Nice speaker system, good value, easy to hook up

(5 out of 5) by Concerned One on Oct 21, 2006 (Clarinda, IA)
I found these speakers at a store in the mall for about 40 dollars. They are nice, compact, easy to hook up, and the sound is very good for being a lower price/ low end speaker system. These are an excellent addition for a spare bedroom/bedroom sound system, or a basement sound system a second entertainment center. For college kids, this is more than enough to sound impressive in a dorm room. Take a look, I don't think you will be dissapointed. A lot of power for not a lot of mula.

Coby Scores .80 & its not Bryant

(4 out of 5) by C. Kingsboro on Apr 25, 2008
I purchased these speakers about 2 or 3 months ago, and so far I am very pleased. To be honest I was skeptical of how good they would be, considering most systems sell for much more, but went ahead and got them figuring I had nothing to lose for the price(around $56). Never owned a sound system before, and had only purchased my first flat screen TV a few months before. Considering I paid 1,000+ for the TV, I wanted to add more dynamic sound (mostly wanted more bass) to my Xbox gaming and movie watching, for as little as possible. After getting the speakers, the installation was pretty easy, although the very simple instruction guide (if you can call a 3 page index card a guide) had me a little nervous. Total installation time was about 10 minutes, and the first thing I did was turn on my Xbox for a little Call of Duty 4. Not knowing, I put the bass all the way up and the sound a little more than half way. Started my first game and I was really enjoying the sound, the bass was wonderful and really added to all the explosions and gun fire in the game. Once I was done with that game, trying to be considerate of my roommates, I wanted to make sure it was not too loud. So I asked them if they could hear me in my room playing, response: "sounded like a war zone, you must have been killing fools".

Pros: Sound quality for the price. (Never owned another system, so I can't compare it to a more expensive setup)

Cons: The biggest and only flaw worth noting is if you want to mute the TV while the speakers are on using the TV's remote, the TV will mute but not the speakers. The only way to mute the speakers is to walk over to them and turn them down or off. (The 3 knobs in the pictures above are the only settings, On/Off, Bass, Volume) A remote would have eased this problem, but it's really not a big deal.

Overall these speakers added what I wanted, more sound and bass than the TV speakers were producing. Really improves my gaming and movie watching experience and I'm very glad I took a chance on these. Additional note - I use these in a bedroom, not sure how they would sound in a large living room but I would think the bigger the room the less joy you will receive from these.(My bed room is fairly large though)

TOUGH AND GOOD SOUND

(5 out of 5) by Morgan Lemke on Jan 29, 2009 (USA)
I bought these speakers for a door room and they have lived up to the test. I found that the speakers that came with the sub just aren't up to par. I quickly replaced them and created a wonderful set-up around the sub. The speakers that come with it are ok I would give them 3 stars. The sub is the jewel here it can take a beating if your someone who needs something that will get kicked around and still work. Its pretty powerful putting a 140 watts I need a little more and am upgrading to the Black ones with 300 watts. Excellent buy if you add some decent satellite speakers its got the kick! GOOD PRODUCT GREAT PRICE

Awesome power for price

These lil gems kick out the tunes and make games sound fantastic. I got these to go with my X-Fi sound card and they are awesome (mine were 39.99). Other COBY stuff I was not much impressed with in the past but these things have changed my mind. Crisp sound even from the sub woofer, would recommend highly for desktop PC 5.1.

BEWARE OF COBY PRODUCTS

The "on" led light does not come on at all, only 2 (right and left) speakers work at all no matter how or what components I connect it to, and those two have a constant loud hum emitting from them. The problem is Coby makes the customer pay for shipping to return the item AND requires a $[...] money order with the return to ship out a replacement, with no option to replace it with something better. This basically means that I would be spending another $[...]-$[...] to most likely receive another defective unit, which with my original purchase price totals over $[...] for something I don't really want to own. Even their customer service department in Ohio at 800-727-3592 finally admitted they get numerous calls for this defective product (spoke to 5 different reps hoping for better assistance). That same number is listed as tech support, which it definitely is not. My basic knowledge is much more extensive than theirs. I have emailed the tech support link at cobyusa.com 4 times to attempt to troubleshoot the unit to verify it is defective, and have yet to receive a response. When I called Coby direct in Long Island, NY at 800-688-2629, they were utterly useless and only gave me a 718-412-4163 to call the Coby return department in Mastis (sp?), NY. Of course you only get a recording every time you call that doesn't even recognize the number as Coby, and simply says "leave a message". Tried that 10 times. Hope this review will forwarn buyers considering any Coby product purchase.
