I've always been sceptical of low reviews based failure rate. I've used Memorex discs on three or four occasions (by that, I mean that I've purchased three or four 100 Pack Spindles -- I buy what is cheapest either on Amazon or at my local Staples). I have found none of the problems with failure that some other reviewers have noted. I am not saying that they haven't had those problems. I can only assert that I have not had the same experience.
I have, however, had some complaints with Memorex discs in the past. I do not bother to make labels for the discs that I burn -- I don't want to spend the money either on the printer ink or for labels. I write on the discs using DVD markers. Until recently Memorex's discs were all silver, but covered with a number of irritating dots. You could write over them, but the surfaces weren't as marker-friendly as other discs, like those made by TDK or Sony. So, my only complaint against Memorex has disappeared.
This may, however, only be academic. Amazon is now producing its own brand of blank DVDs. I've been extremely happy with both the DVD+R and DVD-R discs that Amazon now makes. And their prices so far have been below $20 for a 100 Pack Spindle. If Amazon maintains those prices I'm unlikely to buy anything other than Amazon discs in the future. But if Amazon raises its prices and if Memorex puts its disc on sale, I would definitely feel comfortable buying them in the future.

Memorex DVD +R 100 Pack
These Memorex blank DVD's are the worst I have ever used. Failure rate exceeds 75%. I always do a verify after burning and most of the Memorex discs fail. Have spent wasted hours trying to make copies. Never had a problem with TDK or Sony. I will never buy Memorex again. What junk! After using about 50 of the 100 pack and being extremely disappointed with the performance and quality, I threw the other 50 in the garbage, rather than waste more time trying to get good copies.
New packaging, lower quality media?
I've been buying Memorex dvd+r discs for years. Never had a problem. I always get good quality burns and the discs maintain quality even years after the initial burn. Now Memorex has changed the packaging from a solid based spindle to a turn and screw contraption. I've bought a few of these since they were on sale and I've had nothing but problems with them. My internal drive won't read the discs at all. My external recognizes it but my burning software tells me the disc isn't writable. I've tried with numerous discs from different spindles and am still getting the same result. Anyone else experiencing anything similar?
Memorex - 2nd bad experience
In the last two years I've purchased 100 pack and 50 pack of Memorex. In both cases found many, many that my system would not write to. Purchased Sony and also some "no name" crazy cheap ones online with no issues whatsoever. Obviously, I could have just had bad luck with Memorex, but two strikes....and they are OUT with me.
The Discs are great but this Amazon.com listing is flawed
I ordered these on 2 August 2009. The shipping price listed on the page is $4.99. I ordered several items at the same time, and because this item is not coming directly from Amazon itself but another vendor, I did not get to see the individual shipping prices.
When placing your order you are presented with three shipping options for this item from this vender:
1-day which costs $26.23
2-day which costs $20.73
1-3 Day expedited $17.73
I WOULD NEVER have ordered something for $27 and paid an addition $17.73 to get it at the SLOWEST shipping method possible!!! I believe either the vendor should offer the shipping option of $4.99 listed on the page or the shipping fee listed on the page should be updated.
For this price, I could have purchased them locally and SAVED money! I didn't need them that fast, I had ordered in sufficient time that media mail would have been fast enough.
That said, beware of the shipping fees listed and understand when computing your price that you will end up paying significantly more than that to get them (but they do ship quick).
I have used Memorex DVDs and CDs exclusively for years and have had only 1-3 disc issues (but with DL not with single layers).
Memorex must have corrected whatever their problem was with the older reviews.
