CD motor doesn't last more than a week or two

Nov 7, 2006 - By Philip Su (Kirkland, WA USA)

Despite all warnings by previous reviewers, I went ahead and bought this CD player thinking that I'd have better luck. But, as with previous reviewers, the CD player motor broke within the first two weeks of use. After the first two weeks, it refused to play, constantly listing "Read" in its display. With some tinkering, I figured out that you could continue to play a CD if you "jump start" it yourself by: a) quickly spinning the CD manually, and b) closing the lid and pressing Play while the CD is still going. Apparently, the motor is just no good on cold starts after the first few weeks. In total, I've been able to play about 4 CDs on this before it broke.

I never used the tape feature, but the radio seems to work as well as any low-quality small radio would work. The appearance of the player is stylish, and it's a nice small size.

If, like me, you're looking to buy a cheap CD player, please heed the warnings of multiple reviewers. I disregarded, and ended up hitting the same issues as they did. Beware!

OK unit, but picky with mp3 discs

Apr 22, 2006 - By Chris Swank (Seattle, WA, United States)

I have usually ben happy with the Coby products I've owned in the past, but this one is a disappointment. I wanted to get an inexpensive boom box for my girlfriend to put in the kitchen that would not only play standard CDs but also mp3 CDs and had a radio and cassette recorder as well. The radio and cassette sections seem to do about as well as you'd expect for a boom box selling for $39.95. And yes, it seems to play standard CDs well, although it seems to not play the last track of some of them well. However, mp3 CD playback is very iffy. I have made over a hundred mp3 CDs, and some it will play and others, for whatever reason, it will start reading, then sit there and act like it's having trouble reading, then quit. It also seems it won't read certain brands of CDs I've burned. I don't understand why this thing is so picky. Despite this, I'm keeping the unit since I bought an extended warranty with it and it mostly does fine with its other functions. But I can only play some of my MP3 CDs on it. If you want something that seems much less picky, although not absolutely perfect, and you want something cheap and simple, try the Jwin JXCD472. I got one of those and that one seems to work much much better.

Unacceptable

Dec 8, 2005 - By A. DATTORE

True, this is an inexpensive unit, but it arrived with the CD inoperative; neither CD nor MP3 playing. All I got was "No Disk," no matter which CD or MP3 was inserted. The radio played, but even that was poor. It's a good looking unit and solid in appearance; but ultimately, it's unacceptable. This is the Christmas season, and vendors, shipping organizations, and the users, (myself), are much too busy. For 39.95 dollars, it's not worth returning, either for refund or certainly, not not replacement. I threw the unit out.

Don't wait for problems!

Dec 30, 2005 - By Tiffi (Greenbrier, TN)

This little boombox is quite cheaply manufactured.

The casette deck was very difficult to close from the beginning. One has to adjust the tape just right to be able to close the player. After using it about five times it started shredding my tapes. I am trying to get my money back now because the product is not very trustworthy.

I just love this product!

Nov 11, 2005 - By Antonio Caban (Venus, FL)

I was so amazed that COBY has made a product as good as this. It has Radio, Cassette, CD and MP3! All in one. Now I can record my Old Time Radio MP3s into cassettes. And the low price is so unbelievable. I just love this product and I thank J&R for their quick delivery and excellent packaging.
