Most Helpful First | Newest FirstWARNING - not what the description says!
The description for this product says "Full kit includes drive cables, installation and management software, and illustrated instructions". All I got was an OEM drive... just the drive with no cable, rails, software, instructions or anything else. I don't know if an underpaid stockboy just screwed up or what, but everyone should be aware.
I'm keeping it because I just wanted the bare drive anyway, but I wanted to warn others who might be counting on the additional items.

There is nothing unusual about this drive with respect to installation. It's just like any other 40 pin IDC. The above reviewer must be a dope.
Difficult install and horrible service left a sour taste in my mouth
I have been working with computers for over 20 years on the home PC side. I have used Western Digital exclusively since buying my last 170 meg Hayes in 1993. I have always been happy with Western Digital's ease of installation and great technical support. There was no question when I purchased this drive as to which manufacturer I would support. Unfortunately, all the confidence that I had built up over the years was lost in one product.
I will tell you that as a primary drive, this hard drive is very difficult to install. The directions that the manufacturer provides are great for installing it as a secondary drive, but they provide no information for installing it as a primary, which is important as there is a 130 meg barrier in Windows XP. Furthermore, when I was finally able to set aside time to contact tech support, they said that my drive, which I purchased 4 days ago, was three days out of its one year warranty! I had to photoshop together a receipt from screen caps (because I purchased the hard drive online.) to prove the date of purchase. They now require three days to verify the receipt. Unfortunately, because of this incident, I will never buy another Western Digital harddrive and would discourage you from doing the same.
using it as an external hard drive
I just bought these and also an external enclosure to use it as an external hard drive, so far i have tried it on linux (ubuntu), osX, and windows XP and it seems to work just fine
No complaints with this drive
I bought this drive to replace a smaller drive that was starting to make scary noises. The formatting, partitioning, and disk copy software worked as advertised, but the system didn't initially recognize it when I configured it as the master drive. I had to fiddle with the jumpers, but once I got that figured out it was fine.
