Excellent in-car navigation unit
I'm not very "techie" so this is a review from a layperson. I travelled a lot for work and this unit got me all over the country and back home again with no problem. It has a memory to recall places you frequent such as home and office. You first use a CD Rom and download the maps of the areas you'll be going to, usually about three states at a time. Then you are set. You can just enter the address where you're going (or multiple addresses) and it will get you there. The feminine voice is mellow but somewhat electronic sounding. I used this in rural and urban areas all over the country with no problem. I love this gadget. Delphi was always very helpful on the phone. I had an accident with my first unit and they sent me a new one without any hassle.
No MAGIC here!
It is imporant to know about more than just the neat-o things on today's GPS units. It is more important to know what is going on when you need a voice of direction in a strange place.
On a recent trip to a "Magical Kingdom", I was driving far away from my home state. It was very frustrating to discover that my destination was: NOT on my maps; The maps were not really close to reality; And that it would end up costing me time and money to buy a PAPER MAP at a local drug store to finish the trip! Seems counterproductive to spend money on a GPS unit only to rely on a map for the last 10 miles.
Here are valuable lessons I learned at the expense of the Delphi NA10000:
(1) Map software, and moreso updates, are critical to successful driving.
(2) Private property, even those open to the public, may not be on the maps provided by the company.
(3) GPS units get really confused whenever there is no known road.
(3) The GPS company that uses a respected mapping company is worth the higher costs in Units.
(4) Tired and frustrated children are very loud!
This is a good product. It is simple. It is easily seen and loud enough for use in a minivan. The problem is that the maps are out of date, and there are no companies that are planning to provide any support for this unit.
Research is the key to satisfaction with any of these items.
