overall happy, with some dissapointments

(4 out of 5) by Harold A. Bennett on Jan 16, 2005 (northern MA, southern NH)
I am on my second unit. The first one I purchased, I had to prop the front of the unit back, else it wouldnt always play a cd. So I returned it to Home Depot for another. Which for the most part works to my satisfaction.

drawbacks:
reception is garbage
I have to remember to unplug the battery. If I leave the battery in overnight, it is dead in the morning. bad, bad, bad!

the display needs to be angled upward for better read-ability.

the sound is a little strong in the "high-end", but bearable

It would be nice, that if the unit was not plugged in (to either wall or battery) that there was a function to read the clock. As in push a button and the time displays for a few sectons.

The AA batteries should be rechargeable, it's not like there isnt a charger built into the unit. it would only add pennies to the manufacturing cost.

It would also be nice if the clock had an alarm setting (3 in fact, for break, lunch & quitting time). again, it would only add pennies to the manufacturing cost.

My GREATEST disappointment is that I have registered this unit with BOSCH, and have had it for 6 months. (purchased the first week available at Home Depot). I was at a different distributor this weekend and was discussing the unit with the salesman who informed me of the following:
there is a retrofit kit available for the antenna, with another retrofit coming.

that BOSCH has fixed the problem with the battery draining overnight.

Why was I finding this out for the first time from my tool guy.
I thought this was why we sent in product registration cards, so that the mfgr. could inform us of things like this. A simple postcard "we are aware of a problem with some units, you may bring it to blah, blah, blah,. or at your option (where practicable) you may return this card and we will send you the parts to perform the retrofit yourself.

As an owner of of the 24V cordless set, the decision of which brand of jobsite radio to purchase, was for me a no-brainer. The Red or the Yellow one just made no sense while owning BOSCH cordless tools.

Overall, I am very happy with this unit. it is LOUD and clear sounding. 10-11 hours of music with an mp3 cd is nice for when i travel to places without any radio reception (which I hope to be fewer after the retrofits). It is rugged & square.

Being square may sound like a dumb thing to get happy about, but it allows you to stack things on it.

MP3 Problems

(1 out of 5) by bushrules on Oct 25, 2004 (Wisconsin)
I bought the power box because of the mp3 capability but every cd with mp3s that I put in skipped songs, or would not recognize songs on the cd. I would use new cds and that did not help either. The sound is very highs oriented with no bass at all. The GFI is a nice feature but what I really want is a work radio that functions as a radio and can last a little. When out of the box there are malfunctions with the MP3 capability there is a problem. So I turn on the radio to find that there is no reception. Very bad very bad!!!!

The proverbial fly in the ointment

(1 out of 5) by Kevin Grayson on Nov 30, 2005 (St Louis, Mo. USA)
Its just sad..........guess I'm to blame for not researching reviews BEFORE I purchased one of these online as an early christmas present for myself.

I'm in construction and spend long hours on the job. Some days the radio is the only thing that maintains my sanity, distracts me just enough to not mind being there so long.

Don't get me wrong......I like the features.......was a hands down decision based on that. But now I have a radio that WILL NOT receive my favorite radio stations. Hardly receives any at all!!

Not sure what I'm going to do with it........but right now Bosch gets a big thumbs down IMO.

power what??

(1 out of 5) by P. Hamilton on Jul 3, 2004 (South Lyon mi.)
I purchased this radio from home depot the other day and I have to say I was very disappointed.first off the radio is a tank and seemed to take up valuble space, which wouldn't have been a bad thing if it had been worth it.Second the sterio was not immpressive sounding at all ,weak volumn, terrible bass reponse , and bad reception. All that for just under $180.00 I'm very pleased with my bosch tools, this being the exception! milwaukee sounds 10 times better at under half the price!

New Version! Ignore old ratings. Old problems resolved + new features!

(5 out of 5) by S. Lewis on Feb 13, 2006 (Danville, CA)
First off: If you are considering this, buy it! It's a beautiful thing. One question: Why on earth did Bosch not use a new model number for their 'advanced' Power Box? All the negative reviews are about the old version and keep people from realizing how great this product is. This 'running change' is definitely worthy of a new model number, and deserves many more stars.

I looked at the Power Box a hundred times- on Amazon, and at my local HD store... and almost bought one a dozen times, but the reviews on Amazon made it clear that this was a near miss with some glaring problems. Well, I've had the new 'Advanced Model'that came out around Christmas for about a month now, and LOVE IT!

Reception is crystal clear, which is what everyone complained about before. Also, Sound quality is great, and the remote is very cool. My only complaint: the Remote is IR, so you have to point it directly at the front of the box. If you are too far off-angle, the IR-remote is fairly useless. WHY WHY WHY didn't they use an RF remote on this rather than IR. Line of site remotes don't make much sense on a job site!!

It would also be nice if there was a way to actually control IPOD playback via the iPOD dock & remote. Alas, the dock is simply power, and audio connection- no control. That said, it is a slick 'add-on' designed specifically for the powerbox.

So, two items for the wishlist, but overall, a great, great design, with super sound, and none of the gotchas of the previous versions.
