Better than the 2000, preprogramming is weak

Apr 26, 2004 - By Chris Vander Mey (Seattle, WA)

I got this remote to replace a series of remotes that control 6 components (including a ReplayTV). I chose the 2500 over the 3000 because it has updated program codes and explicitly supports the ReplayTV.

In actual use, the preprogramming is somewhat weak - I had to manually program a number of the buttons for my Pioneer receiver and the ReplayTV. That was pretty easy. I had to be a little tricky when it came to changing the inputs on my Sony XBR400 TV, so here's a heads-up:

When programming the macro, hit: TV -> channel+ -> INPUT(as many times as you need) -> AMP -> INPUT -> Component You Want To Control. You can program this sequence into the component select keys and activate by holding the button for 2 secs.

The key response is slower than I'd like, and the beam seems weaker than the 2000. The device is not that much smaller than the 2000.

In summary, I might have been better off with the 3000, since I had to do a lot of custom programming anyway.

Update:

After using this remote for a while, I'm pretty disappointed. The lack of tactile buttons in the main area was expected but drives me a little crazy. I've mapped some macros to the hard macro buttons but I hit the wrong one all the time - and end up turning everything off. So, beware.

Aweful

Nov 23, 2004 - By Erik C. Madsen (Las Vegas)

This device would make a better melee weapon than remote. The design is bulky the programming configurations are aweful. The LCD is ultra sensitive, allowing you to inadvertantly perform commands with the slightest touch. It does not power off automatically and eats batteries like a Hummer eats gas. You are better off with a less expensive, slimmer device.

Surprisingly Solid

Mar 29, 2006 - By Kevin R. Lovelace (Kings Mountain, NC USA)

I've read reviews going back and forth on this remote, and I thought I should mention a few things that might help. First off, I bought this remote primarily because my mother, who is 73 years old, was mystefied by our component entertainment system. Sometimes she could get everything on and sometimes not. About half the time something was set wrong or not turned on, leading to a lot of frustration.

I bought this remote because I liked the implementation of the macro function. Now all my mother has to do to turn on the entire entertainment system and have everything set to the proper settings is press the "A" button on the remote.

Programming the AV2500 is a breeze. I don't own any Sony equipment, so I can't make judgements about the presets, but it took me all of about ten minutes to have all six of our components' remotes fully programmed into the AV2500.

As for everything else, I would say that the fact that my 73 year old mother is having no problem with this remote whatsoever reveals a lot about the useability if the remote. I would highly recommend it, and am only giving it 4 of 5 stars because it can be a little hard to see some of the buttons. I agree that the remote could use some backlighting on the buttons. But I like so much about this remote that just saying that feels like nit-picking.

Not Compatible with my Sony Compact AV System

Mar 5, 2005 - By S. Strittmatter

This remote is not compatible with any Sony Dream System AV systems. The most frustrating part is that Sony fails to mention this in any of the packaging or in the user guide. I had to find this information from an online support tech at the Sony website.

Awesome

Dec 18, 2004 - By Solo (Boston, Ma)

I waited a few months to write my review, so far I have 0 complaints this thing is awesome, easy to use, and hard to lose due to its size, it is bulky but i can now operate it with one hand, and would not go back to a smaller remote. This thing controls everything and its ability to use macros is awesome, well worth the 100 bucks or so that I dropped on it!
