Very Powerful, affordable theater system
I have no complaints about this Sony system. I bought it a few years back and it still going. It has a very powerful bass and a total of 660 Watts, wich is enough for a standard sized living room. It really makes the walls shake if I turn the S.W. settings in the "level" menu to 10 (the highest). You'll feel you are right in the middle of the explosion, or beside the chopper taking off. Really loud and powerful.
Later on, I got some Boston Acoustic speakers (8 ohm) from a friend and hooked them up to the amplifier and they even sound louder than the included Sony speakers. They are bigger speakers with an extra tweeter though. All I'm saying is that the amp is REALLY powerful.
It decodes pretty much any current DVD and Blue Ray available right now into DTS or Dolby. And if you switch the setting to Dolby Pro Logic II it will decode AUTOMATICALLY any signal from TV or from a VHS or any other Dolby source into a FULL SURROUND signal. Isn't that amazing? Even from regular crappy tv channels with a 2 channel Dolby signal.
Sony really is the best in electronics in my opinion. The digital Coaxial and Optical inputs will connect you to any decent DVD player or Playstation 3 with flawless digital, bassy sound.
I have noticed that the best sound (for this system) comes from DTS signals though. Very powerful and rich.
I have no complaints about it, and you even have the option of listening to FM and Am radio in it (doesn anybody anyway? but its a nice bonus).
Like I said, Dolby Pro Logic II is the highlight of this amp. Forget Dolby Pro Logic I, is useless for today's audio.

Greit Home Theater System
I happy to have it! it's works and looks like new. Very good item especially for such price.
Great for a mid-size room
I've owned this system for two years now, and there hasn't been one issue with it...it's rock-solid. It runs cool, and looks great too, more on this later.
If I have any crit at all, it would be that mounting brackets for the speakers are not included. There was not even a recommended part number in the documentation. I bought a generic set and they worked just fine. The speaker cabs are MDF, so screws fit snugly.
I'm using this in my modest basement theater, and it shakes the whole house, very robust. Honestly, I can't imagine needing more power than this unless you're almost deaf. In fact, the fetching Mrs. Brew is constantly suggesting that we turn it down.
Configuration is a breeze, and the remote is easy to understand, although it is not backlit.
Imagine my delight when 18 months later I bought a Sony DVP-NS75H DVD player and it was an exact matched component! Matching size, front-panel display and connections. Just hooked up an optical cable between the two and was in business.
As an audio professional, I could not be more delighted with the performance of this system at this incredible price.

Nice basic system
I'm very pleased with this purchase. Though I agree with the comments around lacking power (you need to turn the volume to 55+ out of 70 to get strong sound), the performance is solid. Easy to setup and use, a number of options for the type of sound you want. I do wish the remote was configurable with my Sony DVDR/VCR combo. But overall, a nice system for someone looking for a good audio complement to their big-screen tv.
