Audiovox DVD Player D1210 User Review

(4 out of 5) by Jeff Harford on Feb 1, 2004 (Lincoln, NE United States)
I just bought this DVD player. Rather than installing a video system in our new van, we bought this so that we could not only keep the kids occupied on trips, but have something to take into the hotels to watch. I was unable to find any reviews on this, and when you are spending this much money, it would be nice to find the pluses and minuses. So here are mine:

Pluses: This is the largest screen for mobile DVD that I could find. The picture is clear, the sound is fantastic, but even more impressive to me is the infrared headsets that comes with this unit. The headsets make it sound like you are in a movie theatre, and you don't have to have wires strung through the vehicle. The unit also has a TV so that if you buy an antennae (not included), you can use it while you travel. Otherwise, you can easily hook it up to cable in your house. The carrying bag that comes with the unit is very nice and holds everything that you need for using the player. You can plug the unit into the wall for operation or into your cigerette lighter, depending where you are using it, and the unit comes complete with the attachements to hang it on the seats or you can also sit it up on the bed on on a counter for watching at home.

Minuses: So far, the major disappointment with this product is the fact that the first time that we played a DVD, we noticed that there are a few dead pixels in the screen. Although I figured that I could take it back, my concern is that I may end up on a wild goose chase trying to find one that is good. It would seem that for $700, the screen that they put into this unit would not be having dead pixels. The speakers that attach to the side of the screen must be attached in order for them to work - it would be nice if they could either be attached, or be separate. And finally, whenever we want to watch it in the hotel, it is kind of a pain that you have to take it out of its protective casing in order to open the bracket that supports it for standing up. It would be nice if you could keep it in the case.

Excellent choice

(4 out of 5) by William A. Nolan on Jun 30, 2004 (Willcox, AZ USA)
Like the first reviewer, I bought this because I wanted to use it more places than just in a single vehicle. We can use it in my car, my wife's car, the VW camper, or inside. The permanently roof mounted vehicle units cost more and lack this versatility.

The first one I got had a bad pixel (always bright) so I exchanged it and the second one was fine. The sound is excellent, either with the speakers or the nice infrared headsets that come with it. I would like to find a couple more of those.

I also bought a Beamit 400FM device, which plugs into one of the headphone jacks and sends the sound to the vehicle stereo via FM -- just tune to the right FM channel. It works great, but I did have to discover that I needed the WOW off (a feature in the Audiovox) and the volume low. Then I just turned up the car stereo to the desired volume level. Now, when driving, I can at least listen to the movie.

I like this item, and the only negative I would mention is the speakers not working when detatched.

Don't buy this!!!

(1 out of 5) by Mark Duncan on Sep 7, 2004 (Bowling Green, Ohio United States)
Ok, I am on my 3rd exchange. I have had 2 failed units. They both failed on the video side of the unit, but the audio continued to work. The latest exchange has audio problems, and a dead pixel, and I've only had it one day. Don't buy this, or if you do, don't say I didn't warn you. I wouldn't buy any audiovox product. They don't care that the unit is sub standard. I e-mailed them about the units, and their reply was as follows: "Sorry you're having problems with this model" unquote. End of story, no help or offer to help. I would never recommend this to anyone. Buyer Beware!

Fantastic!

(5 out of 5) by Gretchen A. Flowers on Dec 29, 2004 (Mission, KS)
This was a great purchase! I have already been on 2-10 hour roadtrips, one by myself with my 20 month old, and one with my husband and my 20 month old. We even got the sound to run through the speakers of the car, with an fm transmitter that I use with my ipod.--if you do this, everyone gets to listen to the movies. But, a 20 month old will not put on headphones--so this is a great alternative. This unit also hangs on the wall, so when we are home it goes in our son's room. EASY installation. It comes with 2 cordless headphones, and 2 jacks for headphones.

Great product

(4 out of 5) by Christina Johnston on Dec 17, 2004 (Dallas, TX)
I agree with one of the other reviews in that sometimes during the day you cannot see the picture very well from different angles, but this thing is a life saver. We purchased this product last Christmas when our daughter was 1 and a half. We thought the large screen would hold her interest better than the smaller ones. It has been awesome! When we're not using it in the car it is in my kitchen. Now I can cook and clean and not miss any of my shows. But it really got put to the test over this past Thanksgiving weekend. We drove eight hours with a two year old and an eight year old, and barely knew they were in the car. We put it in the back of a minivan, they put on their head phones and other than the occasional plea of the eight year old for no more Dora, they were angels. I would pay twice as much for that kind of peace on a road trip!
