Don't buy this one
We bought one of these for Christmas for our children. They were so excited to be able to watch movies in the van. When we first tried it out, there was sound, but no picture. We read through the instruction booklet and it said that it might do that if it had been brought into a warm room from the cold. So, we kept it. WE SHOULD HAVE RETURNED IT IMMEDIATELY. It finally worked with sound and picture, but then the connection started going bad. The DVD player would just stop working in the middle of a movie. It was like we had unplugged it, but we had not. It turned out that the connection at the plug in spot is bad. We even bought a new cord for almost $40 to try to fix it, but it still doesn't work. It also continues to have sound with no picture at various times.
We travel A LOT and it is so frustrating to be driving along with three children who are so happy to be watching a movie and it just goes off. It takes forever to get it to work again if you can EVEN get it to work again. If you get it started and you happen to mash the play button too hard and move the DVD player just a fraction, it will go off again and you have to start all over.
I contacted the company about this several times. Of course they said when I called that it was out of warranty and they would not do anything. When we bought it, it cost $230.00. Basically that is money down the drain. We will have to buy a new DVD player. I have read several reviews on Magnavox products. There have been several indicating that they have sound with no picture, even on large screen TVs. They call customer service and there is no help available.
I spent extra money to get this well known brand as opposed to a cheaper brand. Well, I think I'll choose the less expensive brand next time. At least if it doesn't work, I won't be losing so much money when I have to buy a new one!

Great Product
While researching different models of portable DVD players over the past few weeks, this is the best one by far. The resolution is very clear for color and black/white DVD's. The fact that it plays DVD+RW & DVD+R discs was a big selling point because I have also recently purchased a Philips DVD Recorder (DVDR 75). The sound in general is very clear. No struggeling to hear it. The surround sound is another excellent feature. All around great product.

good customer service
i wanted to post this since i saw some people had issues with customer service. i just called them b/c my ac adapter quit working, and a new one is in the mail. i called magnavox not phillips, so that may be the difference. they just took my info on where and when i bought it and said one would be coming in the mail in 7-10 days. no charge. other than that (which may actually be my fault for accidentally plugging in my laptop with the dvd player cord), we have had no problems with the player, and it has been a lifesaver in the car and on the plane with my kiddos!

Poor Customer Service
As mentioned in an earlier review, one can order an extra battery from Magnavox. However, getting through to a live person proved frustrating for me. I needed the battery for a long trip, and was told I would receive the battery (if I paid extra) in time. To make a long story short, it did not arrive on time, and I no longer had a use for it. After being on hold, being disconnected twice, and making several phone calls, I was told that I could return it at my cost, and pay a 15% restocking fee. This was despite the fact that 3 people had guaranteed I would receive the battery on time. No reason or apology was given to me for why I did not receive it on time, and Magnavox has lost a good customer due to this treatment.
I'd purchase it again
I've read all the reviews and I have to say that I've had this unit for over 4 years, with twin boys using it. It has been dropped and drooled on and the pause button has been hit thousands of times to stop the action on favorites scenes from movies and it's still running. So, perhaps I'm just lucky, but this thing has takin' a lickin' and still keeps on tickin'. (To coin an old phrase)
