Solid player despite a couple poor reviews

(5 out of 5) by Jeffrey L. White on Jan 25, 2005 (New York, NY)
One thing about Amazon reviews is that the satisfied customers often do not take the time to review the product. I'm usually one of these people. On the other hand, when a customer receives a lemon, he'll almost certainly go online to warn others and to "stick it to" the manufacturer.

That being said, I really think this is a solid player. I've owned it for almost a year now, and it has not once failed me. It's reliable, has all the common outputs, and the picture and sound are great. It plays my DVDs and CDs without issue. In other words, it works exactly as advertised.

So, if you like the price and you like the features, then I would recommend this DVD player without hesitation.

Inexpensive. Easy to Use. And Looks Good Too.

The Sony DVP-NS725P is a sleek, easy to use DVD player that is well suited to consumers who want a player that offers options and design that are a cut above the basics, but still at a reasonable price. The player offers three options for connecting to your television or monitor: composite, s-video, and component video. The cables are included for the simple composite video and audio hook-up, but you will need to purchase cables separately if you intend to use the s-video or component video connections. If you have an HDTV, you will want to use the component video connections to take full advantage of your television's potential. Once the player is connected, set-up is a cinch. With the player and your television turned on, "Quick Setup" will appear on the screen; just follow the instructions. The remote control is easy to figure out, and the instruction manual is clear if you should have any questions. My one gripe about the remote is that the volume button is small and poorly located. There are playback controls on the front of the player, also. They are separate buttons, not one (cheap) frustrating dial, which is nice. The display is large and easy to read. I don't have an HDTV, so I cannot comment on the progressive scan feature, but the player has progressive scan capabilities with video and film modes for those who have HDTV's. In addition to DVD's, it will play music and audio CD's. I'm not a videophile, as you might deduce from the fact that I don't own the latest in television technology. But I have been quite pleased with the picture quality and ease of operation that I've gotten from the Sony DVP-NS725P. I didn't expect as much for such a reasonable price. I think that consumers looking for a good basic DVD player will be happy with this one. And you videophiles out there might find it a good choice for your supplemental television sets.

Died abruptly

(1 out of 5) by S. Davis on Aug 30, 2006
I bought this player new about 18 months ago. It worked well up until last week, when it abruptly stopped reading all dvd's you place in it. Normal use, and a dvd player should last longer than that. I would advise against buying this player unless you plan to replace it within 2 years.

Excellent. Plays all my discs reliably.

After purchasing two other DVD players which either broke down or wouldn't play all my discs, the Sony was a refershing change. It works fine, the remote is easy to use, it plays every format I can throw at it, plus more importantly it ACTUALLY WORKS. My previous players, both cheap and not-so-cheap either wouldn't play even all commercial movie DVD's or broke down altogether. With this Sony I finally have one that works.

beware of sony's customer service

(1 out of 5) by Stephen Williams on Feb 1, 2004 (Toledo, OH United States)
It is difficult to determine product preformance as product never functioned well from the box. Purchased early as a christmas gift outside the 90 day warranty. What a surprise christmas day when we were unable to view new dvds. Sony would not exchange and now we are stuck with a $149.00 paper weight. Buyer beware, it's better to procrastinate than buy early.
