Solo S2 stands out

(5 out of 5) by Stephen Ruback on Jul 22, 2008
Reviews I read varied from great to terrible. My experience has been only good to great. Batteries keep on going and going. Side by side comparison with my corded Valentine echoed the test data I saw that showed only about 10% less alert distance - still much better than most.
My objective was use on my motorcycle; wireless to avoid clumsy electrical taps; compact, easy to remove and secure at stops. I can hear it through my helmet at highway speeds. It works well and fits perfectly in my locking accessory compartment. Better than expected.
Improvements? Sure, a bit louder alarm [not a problem in a car]; can't see the display from the mount on my motorcycle [don't really care]; waterproof case [no one offers one and I can always stow it, if it rains]. Be sure to read the instructions completely before use, and adjust the settings as needed.

still the best

(4 out of 5) by Dr. Douglas Olson on Sep 21, 2005 (Fort Lupton, Colorado)
I am very pleased with the Escort Solo S2. It lives up to its reputation for receiving warnings from a distant source, and for its reliability. I think it was a little overhyped for eliminating signals from store burglar alarms, and I guess the one thing I really discounted a star for is its insatiable use of batteries. One either has to buy the accessory cord, or else buy the permanent Escort Solo right from the swtart.

CORDLESS!?! HAH!! Better invest in Duracell!!

(1 out of 5) by A. Rodriguez on Jan 5, 2004 (New Jersey)
I bought this unit brand new. In less than 1.5 weeks, had to replace the batteries THREE times. Talked to their tech support and was told that expected battery life is approximately 35-40 hours. No way did I drive for 105-120 hours in that one and half weeks!! Considering the unit is supposed to be battery operated, 35-40 hours seems a paltry amount.

I agree that you'll have to buy the Smart Cord instead of relying on batteries. But save yourself the extra $30 for the S2 and the additional $30 for the Smart Cord and just buy the already corded 8500.

The idea of it being a cordless unit is a total and absolute ripoff!!! They need to extend the battery life to at least 100 hours for this to be a viable product.

Easy setup and install. Range not as good as valentine one but sufficient to warn.

X50 8500 vs Solo

(3 out of 5) by R. Enright on Jun 29, 2008 (Mahopac NY)
I bought the Solo for my classic Mustang. I also own a X50 8500 but I did not want the cord. I do not use this car much maybe a few hundred miles per year. So,to test its performance I put it right next to the X50 in my daily driver for a few days. It seems to detect K band almost as good. Ka is a few seconds behind.I did not come across any laser. I do not fully trust this one yet. Those few seconds that its behind the X50 is crucial.I will add more as I use it. It is the only real choice for a cordless on the market right now. I would recommend the X50 8500 if a cord is not a problem.
