Good form factor, poor quality

(1 out of 5) by R. Iskaros on Oct 15, 2003 (Little Neck, NY United States)
I purchased one of these units 9 months ago because I loved the size. The compact design makes it easy to leave on a kitchen counter, or anywhere and tote around the house.

Unfortunately, even with scarce use, the CD motor started making a loud hissing sound when playing CD's that made the unit unusable for CD playback. Sony guarantees labor for only 90 days, so they informed me that it'd cost me $42 in labor plus shipping for them to service this unit.

While I don't expect any CE vendor to warranty and stand behind their products forever, this speaks of Sony quality or at least of this model.

Poor sound, low volume

(3 out of 5) by Patrick Flanagan on Sep 19, 2003 (Toronto, Canada)
I bought this CD play thinking it would be ideal to take on vacations but found the sound quality to be poor and the volume low. In addition the CD mechanism is flimsy. (One good point -- the radio reception is excellent.)

If you're looking for a lightweight travel solution I suggest a Walkman and travel speakers -- the Sony SRS-T77 Travel Speakers are quite good.

Clicking/Hissing Noise

(2 out of 5) by Kirsten Kessler on Apr 9, 2005 (Portland, OR USA)
I just purchased this unit from a local retailer and was extremely disappointed with the CD playback. Immediately out of the box it was hissing and clicking when I put a CD in. I tried multiple CD's (both RW's and standard) and found no change in the clicking noise. This unit was purchased to play quiet music in an work office and the clicking certainly overwhelms the music at lower volumes. After reading the reviews here, I discovered that I am not the only one with this problem. Given the number of people that have mentioned this problem I would reccomend against purchasing this product.

The best of many we tried...

(5 out of 5) by JJH-V on Sep 5, 2004 (Washington State)
I looked at 5 different small CD players for use by my father, who lives in very small quarters in an assisted living facility. The sound needed to be the best I could find for the size, which had to be very small, and the buttons had to be simple enough so that he could learn to use the controls by touch, since he is blind with macular degeneration. This little wonder of a machine is perfect! He now enjoys listening to music from the early 1900s, and looks, at the age of 97, like a kid who has been given the best new toy while he operates the machine without assistance! Thank you Sony, and thank you Amazon, and thank you Crutchfield for getting this little player to us!

Love it!!

(5 out of 5) by L. Torres on Jul 16, 2004 (Oakland)
I have this Radio/CD player for over a year now, I use it at work, every day for over 8 hrs a day, and never had problems with it. We have 3 of this at work and they all work fine. No hissing or CD problems at all. I conected my to a pair of cheap computer speakers and the sound is amazing. That is why 2 co-worker asked me to get them one ea. they love theirs to and everybody that hears them comment on how good it sound, specially for the size and design.
Mine and one of the ones I got for a cooworker, are refurbished and they sound and work excellent.I guess we got lucky.
I am looking to buy one more at a good price for home now.
