My first camcorder and so far I like it

(5 out of 5) by Eric S. on Jan 4, 2004 (Vancouver, BC, Canada)
As the previous reviewer mentioned, I really glad I bought this camera because so far I really satisfied with this camcorder.
All the problems with Elura 40MC,low light quality and motor noise, I did not find it in this model.
My wife taking a lot of taping for my 6 months baby activity :)

Great Deal for the Money

(5 out of 5) by Michael K. Walker on Feb 8, 2005 (Ridgefield CT)
I love my MiniDV. Had a JVC that I purchased years ago with basically the same functionality and it cost twice as much. Love the lowlight option. Although the movements are a little robotic the fact that you can see the action very well is a welcome sight after not being able to record low light situations with the JVC.

Most of the complaints here sound like professional photographers looking to do unbelievable things. If you want a good, basic MiniDV for not a lot of money, this is the camera for you. Some people are saying that the camera is flawed because it won't accept any tape and the door will not close. There simply is moisture on the tape and/or the heads and the camera is telling you to leave it open so it can get rid of the moisture!!! This often happens if you leave the tape in the camera when not filming. You don't have to take it out between shots but if you take the tape out when you're done with it the moisture issue will NEVER happen. If you forget, leave the door open for a few hours and it will then accept the tape.

Trust me. I've had a few of these MiniDV's and this one is a great buy!

Canon Quality Control and Customer Service Stinks.

(1 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 27, 2004
purchased this camera for travel. immediately it started showing messages like head cleaning required, or eject cassette, or condensation detected - all within the first month.
these messages continued occasionally in the 6 months of ownership.

one day i pulled the camera out of my pack on a trip and it just said eject cassette, but eject did not work.

canon replied that the camera had 'impact damage'. this camera has had only incidental impact with other items in my backpack.
they sent a bill for 650 - but that's what i paid originally! not to mention is now sells for 560 - the nerve!!!

well that's it i'm afraid - SOL as they say.
so i now have a busted camera canon refused to fix for a reasonable fee. it should be covered by warranty since it's 6 months old anyway.
i'm quite annoyed.

so next time you are thinking about spendy digital equipment especially if it may require support, skip canon. there are alot of companies that make digital equipment and provide unerring customer service, they understand the concept of creating a customer for life by having a good relationship. canon is not one of those companies.

Very Disappointed

(1 out of 5) by karen on May 28, 2003 (Portland, Oregon)
I almost bought this camera as a gift. It LOOKS great, but LOOKS really can be deceiving! The picture quality is TERRIBLE! It is incredibly grainy video. The picture has speckles all over it. I'm thankful I didn't waste the money. I was able to see the picture on a monitor in 3-different stores. Then I asked to see some other cameras in the same price range using the SAME monitor -- what a difference. The Sony DcrTRV-33 and even the DcrTRV-22 had beautiful pictures. Even the Panasonic in its class looked much better. My advice... take a look at the Sony, and ask to see the picture on a monitor, if the store doesn't have one, go to another store that does. Otherwise, prepare to kick yourself because you won't like what you see when you get it home. Good Luck all--
