Nice Backup Drive

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 26, 2004
First off, the picture on Amazon is wrong, so don't be put off by that. It really is an external drive.

I purchased this drive to use as a backup drive for my old, but upgraded Dell desktop (P3 450, 512MB, Win2K). I followed the simple instructions, plugged it in, and Windows immediately recognized it without having to deal with drivers.

It came formatted as FAT32, but I wanted to format it as NTSF, so I needed to convert the format. This required the use of an MS utility, which comes free with Windows. It took a couple of tries, but that's what you expect from MS. Not the fault of the drive, though it would have been nice if they had formatted it as NTSF in the first place.

I've been using it with its USB interface. I haven't yet tried it with the FireWire interface. The USB works fine.

The drive runs very quietly, which is nice, because I have it sitting right next to my monitor. My only complaint (it's a small gripe) is that it doesn't come with a little stand so that I can stand it on end. I have it sitting horizontally on my desk, which means it takes up more footprint that I'd like. There are other drives on the market that you can stand upright, but this is a minor point to what is a perfectly good drive.
