Decent MP3 player
I use it primarily for mp3s (loud heavy metal), and have to say it sounds good enough to me (although i've never been much of an audiophile).
My only gripes are, the included headphones are cheap garbage... And there is no way to bookmark specific locations within a file. This would have come in handy for audiobooks in mp3 format... usually single tracks can be up to an hour or more in length. Thankfully it picks up where you left off when you stop playback (assuming you didn't open the CD cover in the meantime), and there is a fast-forward function that works in mp3s, but rather slowly (approx. 10-15 seconds to scan through a minute of audio.)
One last gripe would be that it only displays the first 8 characters of file/folder names when using the jog dial. Would be better if they scrolled it or something (the way it scrolls ID3 tags during playback).
Overall a very nice player, and a great alternative to the pricey ipods and archos players (and technically, without the hindered storage capacity as well).
Too bad I did not give it 5 stars
The reason why I did not give 5 stars is the buring software that came with this player. I decided to test out my newly bought player with an mp3 cd. I made a 53 mp3 cd. When I hit the burn button displayed then it was a wait. Well not the usually 10-20 min wait for all burning programs. It was a 2-3 hour wait. This was just 53 songs. I emailed sony and hope they will get back to me about this.
The good-This Mp3/Cd player rocks and everyone should have it!
The ugly-Make sure you rent a movie or two while burning an mp3 cd because if not you will be bored for a few hours. I hope sony can give me a reason for this very slow process.
The pinnacle of portable audio.
Well, I put it on my birthday list, and I got it. I've ad it for approx. three days now, and I have been playing it continuously. Amazingly, and I do mean amazingly, the same batteries I put in it from the begining are STILL at 100% charge. This player has the longest battery life I've ever seen, and it completely eliminates that annoyance of going through batteries every time you listen to a CD in its entirety.
The ATRAC3 format, although not the player itself, is also a very cool thing. The files are incredibly small, and at 64 Kbps (ATRAC3Plus), there is almost no distinction between it and a 128 Kbps MP3. It's a very cool format, and you an fit a lot of music on a CD. Now, burning bunches of CDs and having to browse through them may seem like a tedious task, but not with this player. The ATRAC3 format allows you to fit an incredible amount of music on a single CD, and the jog dial on the CD-player itself makes finding and selecting which tracks you want to listen to a breeze. Now, although the format is awesome, there seems to be a bit of a problem. If you scratch the CD lightly, or have a little spec of dust on it, it skips frequently. It's not as serious as most CD-players would make it out to be, but it minorly interrupts the music slightly. it's not too hard to remedy this problem: simply take the CD out and clean it.
This CD player is by far the best I've ever used. The sound is awesome, the durability is awesome, and the battery life is surely unsurpasses.
This player is for anyone who wants something that looks awesome, plays well, and plays well for a long time without tedious interchanging of CDs or batteries. Also, although it has been out for a long while, the G-Protection is a feature that I have just recently become acquainted with. On the setting of '1', I can shake the CD-player around very violently without a single skip in the music.
