Great features and Price

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Feb 15, 2004 (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa)
I saved up to buy this player recently and was rather surprised that it cost so little,(In comparison to others with similar features.)and had such great features. The thing that caught my eye was the battery life (Claimed 95 hours), the fact that it had Mp3 and Atrac3plus playback. Although it is chunkier and not as sexy as the others availible, it does the job in terms of functionality. I have never used Atrac3plus before, but it was a simple(if time consuming) process. The software provided for this was easy to understand. I was able to burn over a 100 mp3 tracks on to a single CD. The box claims 490 songs can be burned to CD using the Atrac3plus system. This statement is subject to many conditions. bit Rate has to be at an appaling 48kbs, songs must be no longer than 4mins, et cetera. But unless you really need 490 song on a CD this won't be much of a concern. A good 300 songs can be fitted, with a decent bit rate and duration. The headphones supplied are the usual Sony phones, with a non-LCD remote, which would have been useful. They're a little uncomfortable to start with, but get better as you get used to them. Soun on these is very good, even with low bit files. The product on the whole is great, with a few niggles. If you don't mind having only 300 tracks on a Cd, and can do without a handy carring case and the bland design, this is a fantastic buy.

Decent MP3 player

(4 out of 5) by rudis@mikeycomics.com on Jan 3, 2004 (Ft. Myers, FL USA)
I picked this model up at BestBuy after reading the reviews here, and have to say I agree with the general consensus that it is an excellent player.

I use it primarily for mp3s (loud heavy metal), and have to say it sounds good enough to me (although i've never been much of an audiophile).

My only gripes are, the included headphones are cheap garbage... And there is no way to bookmark specific locations within a file. This would have come in handy for audiobooks in mp3 format... usually single tracks can be up to an hour or more in length. Thankfully it picks up where you left off when you stop playback (assuming you didn't open the CD cover in the meantime), and there is a fast-forward function that works in mp3s, but rather slowly (approx. 10-15 seconds to scan through a minute of audio.)

One last gripe would be that it only displays the first 8 characters of file/folder names when using the jog dial. Would be better if they scrolled it or something (the way it scrolls ID3 tags during playback).

Overall a very nice player, and a great alternative to the pricey ipods and archos players (and technically, without the hindered storage capacity as well).

Too bad I did not give it 5 stars

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Dec 22, 2003
I just bought the DNE-710 mp3/cd player. This is my third mp3 player. I bought this because my friend got it and I was amazed at how user friendly it was. What got me the most was how the id3 tags are seen on the little lcd screen so I know what song is playing and what song I want to play at any time. Also 400 songs per cd ain't that bad from what I hear.

The reason why I did not give 5 stars is the buring software that came with this player. I decided to test out my newly bought player with an mp3 cd. I made a 53 mp3 cd. When I hit the burn button displayed then it was a wait. Well not the usually 10-20 min wait for all burning programs. It was a 2-3 hour wait. This was just 53 songs. I emailed sony and hope they will get back to me about this.

The good-This Mp3/Cd player rocks and everyone should have it!
The ugly-Make sure you rent a movie or two while burning an mp3 cd because if not you will be bored for a few hours. I hope sony can give me a reason for this very slow process.

The pinnacle of portable audio.

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Dec 19, 2003
Well, when I first saw this player on Sony's website, I thought to myself, "This sounds like an awesome player." It mentioned such things as G-Protection, being able to play MP3, ATRAC3, and audio CDs. It looked totally awesome, and the specifications certainly backed it up on paper.

Well, I put it on my birthday list, and I got it. I've ad it for approx. three days now, and I have been playing it continuously. Amazingly, and I do mean amazingly, the same batteries I put in it from the begining are STILL at 100% charge. This player has the longest battery life I've ever seen, and it completely eliminates that annoyance of going through batteries every time you listen to a CD in its entirety.

The ATRAC3 format, although not the player itself, is also a very cool thing. The files are incredibly small, and at 64 Kbps (ATRAC3Plus), there is almost no distinction between it and a 128 Kbps MP3. It's a very cool format, and you an fit a lot of music on a CD. Now, burning bunches of CDs and having to browse through them may seem like a tedious task, but not with this player. The ATRAC3 format allows you to fit an incredible amount of music on a single CD, and the jog dial on the CD-player itself makes finding and selecting which tracks you want to listen to a breeze. Now, although the format is awesome, there seems to be a bit of a problem. If you scratch the CD lightly, or have a little spec of dust on it, it skips frequently. It's not as serious as most CD-players would make it out to be, but it minorly interrupts the music slightly. it's not too hard to remedy this problem: simply take the CD out and clean it.

This CD player is by far the best I've ever used. The sound is awesome, the durability is awesome, and the battery life is surely unsurpasses.

This player is for anyone who wants something that looks awesome, plays well, and plays well for a long time without tedious interchanging of CDs or batteries. Also, although it has been out for a long while, the G-Protection is a feature that I have just recently become acquainted with. On the setting of '1', I can shake the CD-player around very violently without a single skip in the music.

great player, easy to use software

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Nov 19, 2003
I have used many, many portable cd players over the years but this is my first mp3/cd and although I don't know much about the technical stuff I found the software extremely easy to use and versatile. It takes awhile to burn alot of tunes but it's worth it to keep from lugging cd's around while travelling. The player itself is great, I'm a klutz which usually leads to the demise of my players but after dropping this one several times now on hard floors it still works great. Sound is marvelous, batts last forever.
