Good value system

(4 out of 5) by D. Straub on Jul 21, 2003 (usa)
This is a very good system for the price. The sound quality is pretty good and the dvd player is top notch. Hook up was very easy and and system comes with easy to install wiring.
The manual is pretty weak so be prepared to learn the system on your own by trial and error.
There are certainly better sounding systems out there but you won't find them in this price range. This is a very good value.

Buyer Beware

We bought our Samsung HT-DB600 Theatre System because it is a Samsung product. We own three Samsung DLP TVs and love them all - fantastic displays and no problems. We also liked the DB600 Theatre System's compact size, low profile and sleek appearance. We installed it in our bedroom and wall mounted the small speakers. It was functional for this purpose, relatively unobtrusive and had good surround sound...while it worked. BUT it has been used less than 30 hours and now powers off immediately and displays the dreaded "Protection" message. Samsung says it's overheating and it is out of warranty. How does a receiver/DVD player overheat while turned off? We had not used it in several days, then turned it on and it turned itself off for "Protection". Who wants to pay $150 + shipping for repairs to a faulty product to likely face the same problem again in the near future? If you are unfamiliar with the "Protection" message and its lack of a simple fix, just Google: Samsung HT-DB600 Protection. This is apparently a much too common problem.

Although we love our Samsung DLP TVs, we will not buy another Samsung receiver or theatre system until Samsung decides to fix this problem, stand behind their products and recall this faulty sound system .

Crappy-quality DVD bundled with OK speakers

(2 out of 5) by Bryan Kennedy on Apr 23, 2004 (San Francisco, CA)
I bought this Samsung based on the good reviews on this board, and because I have a Samsung TV. It was replacing my $99 AMW soundsystem. I was fairly happy with my AMW, but it broke after about 6 months. Obviously bad quality. I thought the Samsung would be tons better, considering it was three times the price! Not so. If the sound was better, I can't tell the difference. One thing was for sure, the DVD player was considerably WORSE - not only does it skip over most of my DVD-R's, but it's loud! Yes, the DVD reader is loud when playing - if you have the sound turned low, you can hear the laser seeking through the disk. Annoying as heck. Other items were found sub-par:

1) No disc memory - if you turn off the player, you start the DVD from the beginning.
2) The remote looks like it was designed in the 80's. No ergonomics, and certainly not easy to see/use. It couldn't even be programmed to control my SAMSUNG tv.
3) It is kind of annoying to have to run audio cables again, considering I already had some in place under my carpet. But samsung was nice enough to put cable attachments (that serve no purpose) on the ends so they are not interchangable. They are standard wires themselves, so can be reused with other systems if you cut off the connector, but you can't put regular cables on the unit.
4) The fan on the back isn't too loud, but I *can* hear it. I think it's just a little weird to have a fan at the back. Since it's not even inside the case, I imagine the skilled engineers at Samsung found that the test systems ran too hot, so attached this fan to solve the problem. Not a big deal, something to keep in mind.
5) There are not a lot of menu controls that can be adjusted for the sound or picture.
6) MP3 playback is severely limited and extremely slow. Sequential only, and to skip past tracks means waiting about 3 seconds per song.
7) Last but not least, there IS NO FAST FORWARD OR REWIND. Not all DVD movies have good chapter marks, some don't have any. Since the player has no memory, you'd have to play through the whole movie if you wanted to get to the part where you left off. Not worth the trouble.

This baby is going back!

Sounds GREAT!!!

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Aug 17, 2003
The Samsung HT-DB600 sounds and looks great. Some reviews that I have read have said their was a thumping coming from the Subwoofer when using the DTS and P-SCAN, but I haven't had any problems. My Samsung system is hooked up to a 43INCH HITACHI HDTV (which looks great). This system is worth every penny I spent on it, would defintly recommend to anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great starter system

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 6, 2004
I got this for my boyfriend for Christmas and it's a terrific starter home theater system. Set-up was fairly easy, the sound quality is great, and we've had no troubles with anything overheating (knock on wood) or being defecetive in any way. The one question we had was easily answered by Samsung customer service. Really a great deal for the price.
