Great phone with audio caller ID! Perfect for home - office use. Big blinking device when new messages are there...wish it was still made!

Must haves: Duplex and Talking Caller ID

This phone exceeded our expectations - love the duplex speakerphone technology and the talking caller ID.

horrible reception & very low range

I bought this phone based on all the glowing reviews I read, but the phone was VERY disappointing. When I walked more than 2 feet away from the phone's base, people on the other line would complain I was breaking up. When I walked out onto my deck, the phone call would cut off completely. I never had this problem with my old cordless phone, a Panasonic 900MHz model KX-TC145.

I also did a side by side comparison with the two phones (old panasonic/new AT&T) and people on the other line told me the reception on the old panasonic was MUCH better than on the AT&T 5830...Even when I was standing only inches from the AT&T's base.

I was very surprised by the limited range and poor sound quality. I thought 5.8GHz would put 900MHz to shame, but I was wrong. My house isn't very big, 1850 square feet, I don't think it's too much to expect reception throughout the house. Heck, with my old phone I can go outside and still get perfect reception in my neighbor's yard. This new one was a big waste of money.

Good thing I still have my old phone. The keypad has worn out on the handset so I can only dial on the base, but other than that it's fine after many years of hard labor. Too bad I don't know where to get a replacement KX-TC1451. I don't think they're available anymore.

Thanks to this disappointing experience I now sound like my grandmother..."they don't make things as good as they used to". ARRRRGGGGHHHH.

Finally, a phone that sounds ok

I've read dozens of reviews and have even purchased several different models including the VTEC T2426 2.4GHZ & 5381 5.8GHZ. It is amazing how bad the sound quality was for every phone I tried, perhaps due to my wi-fi network. While this ATT model is basically the same phone as the VTech 5.8 (with the addition of talking caller id) it does not have any of the crackling that the VTech had. I think I have finally found a phone I can live with. A key factor for me is the voicemail indicator as I tend to let messages sit for days. Now I can't see how I could live without that flashing light. I can't say that I am particularly fond of ATT, but if you want to avoid the mild headaches associated with returning annoying phones, this is the one for you.

The worst phone I ever purchased.

(1 out of 5) by Katherine L Hopson on Aug 15, 2003 (Arlington, TX United States)
I have never written a review on this site before, but the poor quality of this telephone inspired me. The reception of the phone is horrible. There is so much static I always end up having to get my much cheaper cordless phone from the other room. I would advise anyone to not purchase this phone. I am just really mad I spent so much money for this piece of junk.
