Great Cordless Phone

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Dec 12, 2002
We are absolutely in love with these new phones.
They work so good we can hardly believe it.
Battery life (3 days off charger), range (150 yards), clarity, intercom and speaker features are all superior.
They also do not interfere with the 2.4GHz wireless DSL network router in
our house like our prior Sony 2.4 GHz did.
If only they would share or transmit memory entries between units and
recognize numbers in memory for caller ID they would be 100%.

It's not really 5.8 GHz

(2 out of 5) by Todd Palino on Jun 9, 2003 (Shepherdstown, WV)
The cordless phone works, and is clear. But be warned. This is not a true 5.8 GHz phone. The base transmits at 5.8 GHz, but the phones transmit at 2.4GHz. So if you're buying this in order to reduce interference with a wireless network (or from a microwave), look elsewhere. It will not solve your problems.

best of the pack

(5 out of 5) by E. Tomasi on Jan 25, 2003 (NJ, United States)
great features including pre-dialing the number before placing the call, caller id callback number options (1+, area code only, etc.) and great speakerphone quality on both handset and base. hands-free intercom feature is very useful and 5.8 GHz technology does NOT interfere with high-speed, wireless internet. Side-by-side with the AT&T 5830, only differences looks to be the handset/base unit configuration (with AT&T, handset sits in base unit). If you don't have room for the base unit or you want to wall-mount the base unit . . . the VTech 5820 is the perfect choice. Probably the best cordless phone I've owned thus far. Highly recommend.

Hold The Wire

(3 out of 5) by Joseph Albanese on Dec 20, 2002 (New York, New York United States)
VTech has created quite a visually stunning phone system with their VT-5831 entry. The blue charging light, the disco ball colors spelling out the company name on the antenna, the stand up styling of the receiver is all very state-of-the-art and up to the minute.

The phone is light weight and the reception is quite good. Furthermore, it is easy enough to set up and the battery charges quite quickly.

But there are a few drawbacks that VTech should address.

The memory system is fine. You can either manually input a name (and then recall it by browsing or searching as opposed to trying to remember the number you assigned to it)or just save the caller when they call you up. HOWEVER, why do you have to input this data on each phone? You can save it on the BASE unit but then you have to re-enter the information on each handset unit you own. And it doesn't stop with the phone directory. If you have CALLER ID, you can view which call you missed from each handset you have but you have to clear it individually. That is time consuming. Also, the BASE unit is lightweight but why can't the phone (handset one) be attached to it? Why do you have to have the base and the handset separate? It takes up too much room or desk space.

It's a good enough phone but the technological advances all seem to be in the company's decorative stylings and not in substance.

Just keep on buyin' em'.

(5 out of 5) by Robin Johnson Esak on Mar 10, 2004 (Fredericksburg, VA USA)
I bought my original V-Tech about six months ago and was so happy with it, that I have bought three expansion sets. Every handset seems to work anywhere in the house even though my base unit is on the bottom floor. The V-Tech came after a very long search for a decent cordless. I went through AT&T phones, Bell Atlantic phones, etc. I kept skipping V-Tech because I hadn't heard of them before. My bad. This phone kicks some serious elf. I highly recommend it.

Details:
Sound quality is excellent.
Reception is excellent.
Visibility is excellent.
Speakerphone (even on the handhelds!!!!) cool as ever.
No speed dial - Blows, but not the biggest problem for me. I'm not that popular so scrolling through my saved numbers isn't so tedious. :-)
Keypad on base and handset - very useful.
Battery life - doesn't suck at all. I leave mine off the hook for nearly a week before it sputters to a gasp.
