Easiest (most cost effective) way to improve performance.
I have an IBM T23. Between Antivirus, Firewall, Messenging programs, Mozilla Firefox, etc. it eats a lot of memory. I got the notebook for $200 threw in a 7200 RPM drive and then bought this to put in it. It runs much better, on par with my PC. Always go for memory, especially in older computers whose standard module is tiny compared to the resources new programs eat.
Also, if you're buying for the T23, you can mix different memory sizes. My notebook came with a 256mb module, but it has two slots. So I installed the 512 in the second and voila. 768mb of memory. I'll eventually switch out the 256mb for another 512, if I don't get a a new laptop first.

Love my HP dv6 but still prefer the (lighter-smaller-bullet proof) IBM T-23 when traveling. Two modules of NIB Sanyo 512 ram for my old IBM T23 has resurrected its usefulness and substantially decreased processing time for security software. My reinvestment in the T(ank)-23 includes a SIIG (USB based)PCMCIA to Express Card Adapter, a SIIG 2-port-USB 2.0 compliant express card, Microsoft GPS version of Streets and Maps and Verison wireless internet express card. This places the old laptop on par with most netbooks in terms of processing power and communication capability, but with a very familiar and comfortable keyboard, larger LCD display, DVD R removable/swappable Ultra drive bay capability and best of all Windows XP Pro SP3. An SSD in the ultra bay would be great, but I do not think that it exists (yet).
