A Real Stunner - with one tiny glitch...

(4 out of 5) by griffinmill on May 11, 2003 (Chapel Hill, NC United States)
First things first: This player's playback is unparalleled, with progressive scan and with its easily accessed tweaks for aspect ratio and a host of viewer preferences. Our SD-P2000 replaced a Sharp player which still functions reliably but which lacks the circuitry needed to produce an HD-like image. In Short, the 2000 produces outstanding resolution on its own screen and into our monitor through its S output. No improvement is seen using its component output.
The unit works well as a portable with its battery pack, delivering a full movie w/o needing recharge (see below); but it totally justifies its extistence as a desk top screen along side the Mac! Play a DVD or, connected to a cable box (DirecTV receiver in our case), enjoy the sweetest little guilty pleasure imaginable as you work.
Why only 4 stars? The operation manual fails to mention one important caveat: Once the battery pack is charged, remove it from the player if you intend to power the player at home with its AC adaptor. Toshiba confirmed that leaving the pack attached while using line power will shorten the pack's "memory."
If you're in the market for a portable DVD player, this one is your very best option - delivering flexibility and the very best picture. As owner's manuals go, this one does a better job than most; but PLEASE don't lose the battery's capacity by leaving it attached while you're hooked up to AC. Just call customer service, as we did, to confirm this little quirk.

Nice player

(5 out of 5) by J. Toth on Dec 5, 2002 (Wauconda, IL USA)
Just got the player before a flight. I have to say this player doesn't dissapoint. It has a fantastic picture but only so so sound from the speakers (expected for its speaker size). Headphones on the otherhand sound great. It's loud enough even when sitting next to the planes engine. It has a lot of great features including progressive scan component video output if you have a TV that can handle it. Battery size is larger than I would like (my only beef) but has good run down time. Some have complained about battery discharge when the unit is off and TV connections not working. I say READ THE MANUAL! The manual clearly states that you should disconnect the battery when not in use. This is because the unit still requires a small amount of power when it is off. This is so you can use the remote to turn the unit on. As for the video connections, you have to use the monitor button to get video out. This player is definitely worth the price.

The best Portable DVD on the market bar none !!!!!!!

(5 out of 5) by Dave Simpson on Jul 22, 2002 (Berkshire United Kingdom)
O.K.... So it finally arrived over the weekend after a colleague brought it back from the U.S., I opened the box with
great anticipation and was pleasantly surprised. I already own
the SD-P1000 but accidently dropped it and now it's inopearble.
Anyway... I powered it up and couldn't believe my eyes...
The screen is HUGE. The features on it are amazing... 8.9"
progressive scan screen, 3.5 hour battery, (option MEDB02LX is
a 5+ hour battery, twin headphone sockets (although no headphones are supplied, power-on is on the front panel as well as pause, stop, setup (or NAV as it's called), AV source button for connecting a camcorder for instance, etc. etc. The first thing I noticed is that it doesn't get hot like the SD-P1000. The battery
is a flat plinth that sits underneath the player itself. There is the ability to create your own screen saver by pausing a shot and saving into memory as a screen saver (very useful) the set-up screen is completely different to the SD-P1000 due to the NAV set-up. A credit card sized remote makes it great to use and move around. The picure is excellent and their are 4 facilities for creating your own picture set-up, including contrast, brightness,
tint, colour, sharpness etc. The sound is fantastic as you have 3 sound modes, normal, 3DN-2-2, and dialogue which sounds very loud. You'll all be impressed by the size and build quality of
this player, a real gem !!!. By the way... You can but this on the web at around..., a absolute bargain.

Like a Drive-In Theater in your pocket!

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Aug 31, 2002 (Washington State, United States)
What can I say? I bought this unit sight unseen based on reviews, etc. and took the plunge for [$] big ones >>GULP<<.

And guess what? It's a GREAT little unit! I was concerned about the audio quality, too...and it's not as bad as some reviewers say. (NOTE: there are THREE sound settings-normal, 3D, and Dialogue. The later setting is best for built-in speakers). What do you expect from tiny speakers? Besides, if you are watching yours on an airplane, etc. do you really think everyone else wants to hear your video or music? NO.

Get a set of quality headphones. I got the SONY MDR-NC20 Noise Cancelling headphones for it, and they sound SUPERB!..especially w/the player's 3D Spatializer option on. It also has TWO headphone jacks, so you and a partner can enjoy.

I also bought a JENSEN cassette audio adaptor for vehicle use, for "Simulated Drive-In" effect! Use the 3D audio setting for vehicle stereo "surround".

All in all, this portable DVD player has a host of connection and display options (like being able to capture a video frame for customized 'wallpaper') that put many component sized desktops a run for their money. For the price it should perform at the top...and it DOES! Try it on a huge SONY WEGA set. I did. SUPERLATIVE!

ADDED NOTE: The CaseLogic DVD case: PDVK1 fits this player, with the external battery in a second pocket...just barely, but it does fit.

Great Picture, Big Battery

(4 out of 5) by GUS FISHER on Oct 22, 2002 (FLETCHER, NC United States)
I bought this portable after finally breaking my little Panasonic Portable L50 I had since 1999. I had dropped it about 15 times and the screen finally broke. I had come to Amazon to buy the big Panasonic but started reading about the Toshiba and decided to buy it.

The picture is FANTASTIC. The sound is fine. I don't know what people were saying it has weak sound. It is the same as my other DVD portable player. The only negative I have is the size of the battery on the base is pretty big. It makes the little unit pretty thick. I would have gone 5 stars except for the battery.
