For those who can afford it, the DVD-RAM/DVD Revording setup is a great alternative to VHS. These double sided discs are also a better buy than the 4 GB 1 sided discs as these can hold more, thus enabling you to record more programs at higher quality. If you've got the right equipment, this is the recording material to get.
