Not rugged enough, but pretty cool while it lasts.

(3 out of 5) by Steve Kim on Feb 24, 2006 (New Jersey)
After 3 years of daily use in my pickup truck, my unit occasionally refuses to eject a CD and requires some smacking around. The motor that extends and retracts the button panel tends to get stuck midway. In reality the smooth face is not a theft deterrent.

Cool looking - THIEVES KNOW WHAT IT IS

(2 out of 5) by Patrick M. Kelly on Dec 29, 2004 (Sacramento, CA USA)
This is an awesome head unit, it has some pretty trick features including the "blank plate secrurity". The buttons pop out when you turn it on, otherwise it is always blank. The problem is that this unit has been out for a few years, and theives aren't that dumb. I have a few friends that bought these when they were way expensive after they first came out, and about six months later, one of them was stolen. All three of these guys were ripped off within a year of purchase. Thieves aren't dumb, so don't buy this unless you have a good alarm, or if you install it in a way where it can never be removed without cutting the mounts. Other than the fact that these are no longer "discreet" stereos, I would recommend this if you want the awesome look and don't wnat the increased chance of theft. If you are worried about your stereo, either call up Secret Audio, a company that designs hidden CD players that run through stock stereos, or go the normal route and get a removable faceplate.

Great Sound Plus Anti-theft!

(5 out of 5) by J. Salamay on Sep 12, 2004 (Motown USA)
I've never been able to settle for just "good" I wanted great sounds. After accidently leaving my detachable faceplate in my old car stereo, my car was broken into and the stereo was stolen. Shorlty after this event, I wanted to find a better alternative to the "detachable face" stereo. I found it! The Kameleon is a great car stereo... Plus when you shut off the stereo or turn off your car, the stereo seems to DISSAPPEAR and turns into a solid black plate. No one will notice that there is a stereo in your vehicle! When you turn it on, the stereo LOOKS and SOUNDS GREAT. I highly recommend this item.
