Best 2.4GHz Phone So Far!

Aug 25, 2002 - By praetoriansf (San Francisco, CA United States)

My Siemens 2410 phone started to act flaky after about 1.5yrs, so I went shopping for a new phone. One feature I hated about the Siemens was the button "feel" - one had to press a couple of times for the number to register and it became annoying when trying to dial in a hurry. The range was also suspect, especially prominent when 50ft+ away from the base. I went to some local electronics store and saw the Uniden TRU 446-series.

My main concerns were voice clarity and range. The Siemens phone frequently exhibited a "muffled" sounding voice according to the party calling me. The Uniden was superior in this respect - callers were surprised when I told them I was talking to them on a cordless phone. The voice clarity is *that* good. Range was also much, much better. I can now frequently go 50ft+ without any signal degradation and I have a lot of potentially disruptive devices in the signal path, i.e. microwave, computer, etc. The buttons were also great - it has a nice tactile feel as opposed to the mushy feel of the Siemens. The phone is also light and the slight curvature of the handset shows the designers were concerned about the phone's ergonomics.

I can't recommend this phone highly enough - Amazon also has the best price in the market currently, and no sales tax & free shipping as well!

Great phone until you use a headset

Dec 1, 2002 - By M. Ironfield (Oxnard, CA USA)

I agree with the other reviews but when I use a headset, my friends complain that it is hard to hear me, a basic platronics headset with a microphone sensitivity switch set to max was an improvement but not sufficient. I have tested these two headsets with other phones without a problem. Uniden's customer service answer was to try their own headset but I fail to see how that is going to help when it cannot compare to the quality of the Platronics.

The TRU-446 is not ready for primetime yet...

Nov 21, 2002 - By S. Claeson (Aurora, CO United States)

This phone has terrible sound, a constant backround hissing. I recommend the analog Uniden EXI 376 instead, which has much clearer sound and costs half as much. I own both (although not for long, the TRU-446 is going back). Do yourself a favor and don't buy this model.

good phone

Dec 16, 2002 - By Dr. Jekyll (Audubon, Pa. USA)

I replaced my panasonic with this uniden because the panasonic was acting up ,it was a 900 mhz digital spread and the uniden is a digital spread also but it operates at the better high 2.4 ghz. so it should have an increased range but it starts to break up at the same distance the panasonic did, perhaps this is because the companies are advertising the frequency they use but not the power output leaving us still somewhat in the dark. I must admit though that the panasonic had a much better range than I thought it would in wich case the uniden seems to have an ok range and this uniden has a lot of features for a phone in this price range including ni-hm batteries that have no memory so you don't have to tell people not to put the phone back in the charger if it doesn't need charging yet, that's a good selling point to me and I would have bought it sooner if they advertised the battery type a little better. And the ni-hms last a long time. So despite the slight if any increase in range over my panasonic the uniden has to many other thing going for it at that price so I have to give it a good raiting.

The sound quality and the over all options present an excellent phone for it's price. I highly recommend it.
