Hopeful but Disappointed

(2 out of 5) by John Pritchard on Jan 24, 2003 (Raleigh, NC United States)
The low price of this product was attractive, and perhaps a red flag, but I have respect for the Koss name, and took a chance. My main complaint is with the noisy cooling fan. (Other reviews had mentioned this flaw as well). Because of the shelving available to me, I need a slim-line unit, and a fan may be the only option for these. I'm guessing the "fat" units use heat-sinks instead of fans. I don't really know, but at normal listening levels I found the fan noise distracting.

Additionally, after playing around for about two hours, I still couldn't seem to get the decibel levels to adjust for surround. I don't know if it's the system or me, but either way it ends up unsatisfactory.

I will spend a little more money for something I like better. The product seems to be made solidly, and the design is attractive, but the downsides makes it unacceptable, and I have returned the system.

Inadequate product with inadequate warranty

(1 out of 5) by Phillip I. Good on Apr 14, 2003 (Huntington Beach, CA United States)
Product purchased through Amazon died after nine months; alas, warranty is only 90 days. No mute button. If you switch from DVD to TV, you must restart DVD from beginning. Speaker are a joke; fortunately, receiver has sufficent power to support my existing rectilinears. Biamped sub-woofer is always on, a power consumer, even when unit is off. Had to purchase a separate RF-generator for $30 to access my TV.

Nice little budget system

(4 out of 5) by W. Anderson on Nov 26, 2002 (Portland, OR USA)
For a little money, you get a capable system. The built in receiver and DVD work well together. I purchased this for my bedroom system wich, besides the C220, consits of a Dish Network reciever and a Sony 16:9 17" flat panel monitor.

Positives: Sounds great for movies. The dialog is right in the range of the main speakers and the boomy subwoofer really pops out the special effects. Easy to set up. Koss OEMed the DVD menu/setup system, but it is clear and easy to use. Price.

Negatives: Sounds thin for music. While the speakers are great for dialog, they can't do full range for music. Boomy sub sounds out of control here. Fan. In the bedroom, I often want to play this a low levels. The fan noise can be very distracting. Video quality is not on par with my Sony DVD player, or even my old Toshiba SD-2107, but it works for the bedroom and a small screen. Can't do a shuffel play on regular CDs or MP3 CD-Rs. This would be nice when you have a 100 songs on a CD-R.

I know I listed several "negatives", but the low price makes up for it. One speaker in my main setup costs more than this!

Excellent For Price

(5 out of 5) by Andrew d'Albenas on Apr 12, 2003 (Miami, Fl United States)
I got this System about 4 months ago and so far, it hasn't frozen once. It extremely easy to set up. I have watched a number of movies, and the sound quality is better than I expected. I guess thats because of all the Dolby Digital stuff on it, which is great by the way because usually Sound systems with so much dolby digital stuff on costs ALOT of money, but this was at a very good price. The only little thing that bothered me in the beginning was the noise of the fan, but you'll get used to and then won't even know it's there. If the rear speaker don't seem to working or are at a low volumewhen you listen to the radio, it's just how it is, theres nothing wrong with it, but with movies and cd's you will be able to hear it better. You can hook up Game systems to it and it WILL work fine,...Overall, the sound is excellent, the video is also excellent. This is extremely good for a beginner at Sound Systems. Buy This! It's a MUST HAVE!!!

Great sound, fills medium sized room. Setup allows for input as to speaker placement. Price was right.
