I have had this DVD player for years. I have not had any problems with it yet. It froze a couple of months ago but other than that nothing.

Do not buy this product

(1 out of 5) by Jennifer Allan on Sep 3, 2008 (OLDSMAR, FL United States)
Bought this unit because I have another Sony DVD player that has worked great for 10+ years. This newer unit worked great for about a year, then started to power off during movies. Now it no longer works at all. Scans thru all 5 DVD's then says NO DISC error message. Contacted Sony repair shop who basically let me know that it would be just cheaper for me to buy one of their newer DVD players since it will be the same price if I decided to ship this product and repair the Laser. Not sure if the Sony line is as good a product as they used to be from all the Forum postings I've been reading lately.

Great DVD Player

I bought this DVD Player with a complete surround system in 2001 and it has worked perfectly until last month when I accidentally kicked the tray. DO NOT DO THIS. It caused damage to the tray. If you need repairs to your Sony DVD Player, DO NOT SEND IT TO Sony Customer Service in Laredo, TX. The lied to me about fixing it and replaced it with a cheap, used and scratched version. I was told on the phone that I would get a refund, a mailing label to send back the DVD player that they sent me, and I would receive my old player. When e-mailing them, all I get are pre-written messages thanking me for my time. I have written the state attorney general in Texas for further action. Find a reputable dealer in your hometown instead.

Good all-around Player

(5 out of 5) by Thomas Litchford on Jan 10, 2007 (Rhode Island)
I've had this player for four years and haven't had any problems with it. I'm about to upgrade my TV to an HD unit, and, though this DVD player has no HDMI jack, it does have component video jacks that will work.

I don't think I'd buy this today, since HD formats are starting to come out, but it's been a good player for general use. How nice is it to have one box for CDs and DVDs?

Turns into a bust

(2 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 27, 2002
I purchased this DVD player, my first DVD player, because I was told it was really good and had been happy with my other Sony products. Boy was I disappointed. The picture quality was good, the sound was terrible and 7 months after I purchased it the carousel stopped working. I would put in a DVD and the machine would not register it was there. When I picked up the machine I could hear parts moving around in it. The sound was so terrible I would have to turn the volumn all the way up on my Sony TV just to barely hear the movie. When I called Sony about it they told me I would have to pay for all repairs. I traded it in for a less expensive single disk Sony DVD player. My new one works much better. Sony makes some good products. This one, however, was a bust.
