Great Player

(5 out of 5) by MARCEL R LAPOINTE on Dec 27, 2001 (Lowell, Massachusetts United States)
Rlly satified w/ the player. Great features, great design, good looks... Never skips w/ G-Protection on. Really good battery life and the built-in charger is convenient. I always have G-protection on, and get about 30 hours of playtime before the batteries die. I didnt like the earphones much, so i replaced them, but they work well. Nice features. I suggest you all but this player :) Rlly, rlly, rlly nice.

Great Skip-Free Portable

(5 out of 5) by M. J KILLEEN on Jun 15, 2002 (Collingdale, PA USA)
I've owned this model for about a year. I listen to it every day at work. Just today I was listening to a CD and I accidentally dropped the player off my desk. It bounced a couple of times and landed upside-down -- the player never skipped a single beat. That's amazing. It has terrific sound and is easy to program. (And the price isn't bad, either). Highly recommended!

Worth seeking out (in some form or another)

(4 out of 5) by achidley on Jan 3, 2006 (USA)
I bought this player several years ago as a replacement for an older Discman/car kit that didn't have any skip protection. I took it on many 6+ hour trips and listened to it in various college art classes-it even survived plaster dust from not one, but *two* sculpture classes! It eventually malfunctioned after I left it in a car during a 95+ degree heat wave, which the guide specifically said I shouldn't have done, and I replaced it with a newer Psyc model last year (ASIN: B0001NBHMG). However, this older model is still my favorite one for several key reasons, and I will be purchasing the car kit version (ASIN: B00005N9DN).

Pros:
1. Great skip protection courtesy of G-Protection. My last Discman, despite being part of a car kit, had to be held perfectly level to play smoothly and would skip constantly on car trips! When I first bought this one, I jumped around with it in every direction to test it out, and in the several years I owned it it did not skip even once.

2. Battery life. The battery life on Sony Discmen is phenomenal. I usually carry around a pair of spare AA batteries just in case I run out of power, but I've gotten through week-long family trips with well over 15 hours of driving without even coming close to draining them.

3. Button arrangement. The main playing buttons, as well as the play mode/display/bass buttons, are all arranged around the display near the top. Unlike the Sony Psyc Discman I bought last year, I don't need to shift my hands to stop or skip tracks.

4. Separate jacks for the headphones and the car kit. My newer Psyc Discman combined these jacks and boosted the overall volume. Fine if you're predominantly listening to older CDs or using it with a car kit, but uncomfortable and conspicuously loud if you listen to plenty of louder CDs (such as Black Cherry by Goldfrapp or the Scissor Sisters) in a quiet room/car through your headphones. When your headphones are plugged into the headphone jack on this older model, you can reach a lower minimum volume than on the newer Discmen.

5. Durability. As I mentioned before, I've taken it to many art classes with various amounts of charcoal and plaster dust in the room, but it didn't have any problems. Only the extreme heat finally managed to kill it.

6. The batteries are inserted through a door on the outside. My newer Discman, for the sake of style I assume, put this door on the *inside* of the player, so when I have to change batteries on that model I have to temporarily take my CD out to get at the battery compartment.

7. Headphones. The player I bought at Best Buy came with ear buds with wrap-around clips, and the cord had a little adjuster to keep the excess headphone cord from twisting and tangling. These are fairly cheap and easy to come by (about $5-10 alone) but still have decent sound quality and do a good job at staying in place comfortably; I'd recommend getting the black-and-silver ones (ASIN: B000092YR6) to match this player.

8. And last, but not least, sound quality. The sound is clear overall, and the bass level can be boosted to give depth to older CDs or albums with weak bass.

Cons (relatively minor):
1. Not as slim as newer Discmen.

2. The volume buttons aren't near the main play buttons. Still, they have a larger surface to feel for than the ones on the newer Psyc Discman.

3. No backlight for reading the LCD in the dark (my Psyc Discman doesn't have one either).

4. The battery indicator became a bit dodgy on mine after awhile and would sometimes jump back and forth between notches.

If you are also picky about volume and things like button positions, I'd recommend at least checking out a slightly older used/refurbished Discman model such as this one before buying a newer one at full price. The loudness of the combined headphone/car jack on my newer Discman (as well as smaller "improvements" to the design) ultimately made me seek out this refurbished model again.

Lasted me for over 1.5 years

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on May 1, 2003
Pros:

Battery life! I bought 4 Rayovac rechargable batteries with this unit and have yet to ever buy new batteries. Two rechargables last anywhere from 15-20 hours.

Skip protection: Dropped it pretty hard and it didn't skip.

Cons:

OEM headphones are garbage.

Automatic Volume limiter sometimes comes on by itself and is very annoying.

Sometimes when running this player skips. I think longer term jolts will cause this unit to skip.

Overall: When I bought this cd player in the fall of 2001, it was really cool at the time. It looks cool and has amazing battery life. With the newer mp3 players, radio, etc, I see no need to buy this player.
