Junk

(1 out of 5) by M. Reno on May 23, 2006 (Ohio)
There is no Tech Support for the 5800/5820 scanners. They are the most worthless pieces of junk ever to be assembled. I would not buy this crap if it was being sold for a dollar. The Windows XP drivers are corrupt and Tech support does not answer their phones. When they actually do answer the phone they put you on hold for hours. Most likely because they have an unending stream of furious customers.

Not a great scanner just ok

(2 out of 5) by James Dean on Apr 3, 2005 (Virginia)
I've had this scanner for just a little over 2 years. After the first year I developed a problem with the power supply cable connection in the back of this unit. The scanner's power supply cable unit in the back became loose and it would not recognize that the power supply cable was actually connected to it. I ended up having to hold the power cable into the power socket for it to recognize its own power supply cable. I then had problems with the usb cable. The usb cable is directly attached to the back of the unit which cannot be replaced. For some reason or another it failed to work correctly by not recognizing that it was plugged into my computers usb socket. I would have to play with the usb cable itself in order for my computer to recognize that it was connected to my computer. It finally stopped recognizing that I had it plug into my usb outlet on my computer. I think that the wiring inside of this scanners usb cable may have become frayed, due to poor quality. After having so much trouble with the cables and then the last issue with the usb connection, I gave up on it and have sent it to a better place- the trash can.

Great product at an excellent price

(4 out of 5) by J. Wilson on Apr 15, 2004 (Richmond, VA)
Bought the 5800USB at a discount store for $23.00. It was missing the power supply - I called Visioneer's toll-free number and they 1. were very pleasant and professional and 2. shipped one out FREE that day.

It installed easily on Windows 2000 by popping in the included CD(ScanSoft PaperPort Deluxe 7, and I only installed PaperPort, nothing else). It has worked flawlessly - the 2400x2400 dpi is a bit much for my little 256mb of memory, but other than that the quality is good* and I'm very happy about the product and its price.

* My old scanner (stress on OLD) was a piece of junk - I know there are really great ones out there that are much more expensive. This one does the job for me.

Very Good Scanner

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on May 27, 2003
...Works great on XP.
Before I installed I downloaded the latest drivers from Visioneer. Then I installed software. During software installation it prompts you to plug in the scanner. No problems there.
The one touch software takes a little time to set up. I always use the configure before I scan option (or I just use the paperport software). I like to make sure that my settings are always right for what I'm scanning.
The 5800 does not scan negative prints. But the 5820 does.
Overall I think this is a good scanner with good quality at a great price (especially if you get it with a rebate).

good scanner

I have this scanner for several years and I never had any problem with, I just saw a review that it does not work with xp its not true. I wouldn't buy this scanner based on this bad review, I hate seeing people who just like to complain, its a good scanner its not fair for visionner to have this kind of impression.
