Good, but the LS200 is Better

(4 out of 5) by J. E. Gillaspy on Feb 14, 2004 (San Antonio, TX)
These speakers (LS400) are pretty good. However, even though they are rated at 100W, and the LS200 at 50W (Both from Audio Source), we believe the LS200 speakers reproduce the audio frequencies more accurately. Both use the same 4" polypropylene woofer, but the tweeter arrangement is quite different. This undoubtedly is responsible for the better performance of the LS200. (The LS200 uses a mid-range and a high frequency tweeter as opposed to a single tweeter in the LS400.) The 50W capability of the LS200 should be adequate for most applications.

The mounting brackets supplied with both speakers are nothing to brag about, but, the LS400 brackets are made of plastic while the LS200 are at least made of steel.

The spring clip wire terminals work well (the same on both). These same clips are used on some much more expensive speakers.

These speakers are a good buy but the LS200 speakers are a bargain.

Unbelievable value if you have reasonable expectations

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Aug 22, 2003
I was looking for a pair of speakers to mount on the eave above my deck. Based on the reviews and the unbelievable price ...with free shipping I gave these a shot. I was not looking to shake the earth, just to enjoy moderately loud music on my deck and in my backyard. I'll agree that the brackets are a bit on the flimsy side, but as soon as I hooked everything up I was flat out astounded at the rich sound quality .... Sound quality is comparable to our ... Cambridge Soundworks ensemble speakers in the living room. I am especially thrilled about the lack of directionality (imaging?) as I was worried that I would have to mess with the balance a lot to get good stereo sound depending on where I was standing relative to the speakers but it is not a problem at all. I'd buy them again in a second!

Water resistant?

(3 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jul 3, 2002
Good sounding speakers given their size. Was a little disappointed with the fact that they are considered outdoor speakers but are not waterproof. You're expected to mount them under eves. Unfortunately, I wanted them mounted on the outside of a shed. Built a plexiglass cap to mount above the speaker to reduce the amount of rain it will be exposed to.

Great for the money

(4 out of 5) by Jeffrey E on May 24, 2003 (Austin, TX)
These speakers are quite nice. The have good sound and I doubt that you could find any thing better even at twice the price. I would not ever compare these to a set of Bose outdoor speakers, but then they are a fraction of the cost. They have a nice full range at moderate levels, but if you start to push them too hard the bass begins to break up. Not unexpected for a 4" speaker.

I have them mounted under the eves out on my back patio and they offer a great sound for background music. They make our backyard more enjoyable and fit our bill perfectly. I would recommend these speakers if you are looking for a nice pair of outdoor speakers at a reasonable price and you do not want to recreate a high end system outside.

One item of note is that they recommend that you mount these in a location where they are not subject to direct exposure to the elements. I'm not sure what that implies here, but to acomodate their recomendation, I moved the location slightly to keep them out of a direct hit from the rain.

Not bad

(4 out of 5) by Jennifer on Sep 23, 2003 (Portland, OR United States)
I bought these speakers because we were looking to replace the behemoth tower speakers that came with our stereo, but didn't have the money to really get the best. I'll admit that I was a bit daunted by the price -- who knows what you'd get. But after reading the reviews, I just couldn't pass them up.

At first, I was very impressed with the sound. After listening to a wider variety of music, I realized that the speakers are good... not great. But, you know, they really are impressive for forty dollars.

I'm not an audiophile by any means. I did notice, however, that the sound is a bit "thin." I was hoping for something a bit richer, especially on the bass end.

We're going to keep them. They're great for what we need them for and, if we decide to upgrade to better speakers in the future, these will be *perfect* for outdoors.
