Consider something else

(1 out of 5) by Donald L. Vanprooyen on Nov 11, 2002 (Eureka, IL)
I purchased this unit in Dec. 2001 for it's ability to play MP3 files. Which it did for about 3 months and then it began playing 5 or 6 selections and quit. It does the same thing on regular CD's as well. I sent numerous emails and also a regular USPS letter. I have not had the courtesy of a response to date (11/10/02). Based on Memorex's lack of response I will never purchase another Memorex product again. By the way, if I could rate this product with zero or negative stars I would. If you cannot tell it by now, Memorex makes my blood boil.

mp3 boombox - not this one!

(1 out of 5) by Betty Jo Mooore on Jul 18, 2002 (Chicago, Il United States)
Has only played from an mp3 style disc once, and after 4 months of ownership it does not even play audio cds anymore. I wish I kept my receipt. I wish I read reviews first.

decent sound, no output jack

(4 out of 5) by Kevin R. Terrell on Oct 14, 2001 (Minnesota)
I just bought this but am in the process of returning it because it has no output or headphone jack. I saw the MP3 capability as a way to tie into my regular stereo equipment so that I could leave a single CD in for a party and walk away. Obviously you need some sort of output jack for that.

I tried to figure out from the online info whether or not this had such a jack, and finally decided that nobody would be dumb enough to make a boombox at this price point without a headphone jack. Wrong answer.

My 5 minute test suggests the sound is decent enough though. If you don't need to tie this into any other system, it is a good buy.

Memorex MP3124 Portable CD Player Boombox

(4 out of 5) by Andre Brussard on Dec 11, 2001 (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
I just received my player and I am very pleased with it. Everything worked fine but I was dissapointed with the text display option when viewing the FOLDER NAME and FILE NAME. When using this option it is limited to 8 charactors and also replaces spaces( ) and hyphen(-) charactors with a zero(0). I think this was and overlook when most people use the ARTIST NAME as the FOLDER NAME also the FILE NAME as the SONG NAME for folder and files on their computers. Often they include track numbers and text names using spaces and hyphens. This option doesen't SCROLL like the tags feature and causes inconvinience when burning because you have to rename FILES and FOLDERS before you burn so that it makes some kind of sence.
Tags seem to read fine, this is where the player is nice. The Tags scroll across the screen as such (TITLE SONG TITLE) in 15 or 16 second intervals. The same goes for ARTIST and ALBUM. These tags have a limit of 30 characters. Buy why couldn't the FOLDER NAME and FILE NAME have the same capibility?. The backlit LCD display is nice and I love the style.
