Highly Recommended Cordless Phone System

(5 out of 5) by IRDOC on Aug 27, 2001 (Bucks County, PA United States)
After years of frustration with what were touted to be the best models along the evolutionary path of cordless telephones, I finally feel vindicated by having found the KX-TG1000N system. This phone system has all of the features that I have always desired and it has demonstrated superior quality in all areas. Although the phone handset is smaller than average, it is comfortable both in the hand and between the shoulder and ear. Its smaller size makes it lighter and therefore less cumbersome. The audio quality on receiving and transmitting is excellent, with uniformly good feedback from people with whom I regularly converse. There has also been no interference at all (even with the base station lodged between my desktop computer and speakers), and the range has been great. Perhaps this reflects the highly desirable frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology this system employs. The speakerphone is also very good, with clear reception and transmission. Note that a speakerphone is present not only on the base station, but also in the handset(s). Although the handset speakerphone is also good, it will greatly reduce battery life. The battery is not the usual NiCd battery; it is a NiMH battery, offering much longer life between charges. There is also a compartment on the side of the base unit which houses (and keeps charged) a spare battery (optional), which can power the base in the event of a blackout, or which can be used to swap with a handset battery low on power. I enjoy the ability to add up to a total of 4 handsets with this system (one comes with the base; the others are optional). The handsets are digitally registered to the base, preventing surreptitious use of the system by unauthorized outsiders. The system has the ability to announce and transfer calls from base to handset, handset to base, and handset to handset. An integrated intercom system is an added bonus. Additionally, multiple users can talk to a party (conference style) simultaneously. Of course, all of the standard features you would expect on a phone in this price range are present, including one-touch dialing, stored phone numbers, voice mail indicator, caller id/call waiting id, multiple volume controls, range extender, programmable ringer melodies. Overall, this is a great phone system, which I wish would have been developed years ago.

Why Panasonic, WHY????

(1 out of 5) by William Lau on Jan 21, 2002 (Stockton, CA United States)
Most people that are picky about phones will tell you that Panasonic makes the best cordless phones. But DARN IT, why did Panasonic have sell a Vtech phone under Panasonic name? This piece of junk is made by Vtech (FCC ID indicate so, it's a clone of the Vtech 2461). The phone is made of cheap quality, cheap looking plastic. The phone has a constant hissing sound in the background (another sign of VTech), and a very slow operating system. If you dial number too fast, it will choke, and you may miss digits. The sound quality is poor also--there is NO clarity, though it does not echo like many 2.4GHz DSS phones. Save your time and money, buy one of the Panasonic's own 2.4GHz phones.

Vtech has already destroyed the good AT&T brand name, now they are out there killing another good name. It's pretty sad. I wish these company execs realize that a good name is your best asset, protect it. Don't sell inferior brands under your own name.

An excellent phone set for a household.

(5 out of 5) by Nafis Sadik on Sep 10, 2001 (New York, New York USA)
Just today we installed this handset, along with three add-on phones (a total of four). It was superb to say the least. Dispite the claim for 12 Hours before use we charged it for 2-4 before testing all the phones which worked perfectly. Coming with an array of options the phones were excellent in the ability to listen, and speak back. The intercom feature works well, and with it you can easily transfer calls from one person to the other.

One of the nicer things is the LCD display which shows your number, and lights up for use during the night, you also have a wonderful address book similar to that of an address book on a cellular phone, up to 50 entries with a name for each you can search for entries or scroll through utilizing a menu. Further more each addon phone for seperate rooms require only the phoen and a recharger, meaning you do not need a phoneline in each room an excellent thing as well. Even the base itself is small and does not take up room.

If you have several rooms, lots of calls and sometimes for different people, or usually scream back and forth through your house then this is an excellent phone to aid you in these things. Just make sure to get the additional phones!

Suits My Needs

(4 out of 5) by James Igoe on Nov 23, 2001 (NY, NY)
Reading a few bad reviews - unable to put under chin, no battery, unable to retrieve messages - it was obvious that I use my phone differently and that I have different needs. First, the base phone does have a tray to store and charge and extra battery, so I was curious as to the phone one person actually reviewed. As for putting it under the chin, I never do that, but I find the speakerphone built into the handset a godsend, since I use that feature to put the phone down when I need to write. I use a digital answering service so I don't dial my own phone to get messages, I dial my service. In my small apartment I have had no issues with calls being dropped, and I find the multiple handset feature great, since I don't have to run extra phone lines and I reduce the ugly visual clutter. I have two complaints. One, the phone screeches when I use the base speakerphone and the removeable handset near each other. Two, the phone shows the number of new calls received, but since I receive numerous marketers calling me and hanging up, I find that I am reviewing meaningless numbers.

Very Good Phone loaded with features

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Apr 26, 2002
After much research and several returns, we decided to buy the KX-TG1000N. We had not tried it before secondary to the bad reviews, and I decided not to write one after more than 4-6 weeks of use. Overall I am extremely pleased with this phone and its performance.
Pros:
* It is DSS, which adds to greater range and increased security
* The base digital speakerphone is extremely good. Even though you can still tell a speakerphone is being use, it is of great quality. No missing word or phrases when using it

*The Base DOES have an additional battery charger.
*As with most phones with caller ID, you can dial before pressing the Talk button
*You can communicate with the base or the other handheld units in the house. No need to yell calling people to dinner. You can also transfer the call to the desire unit (base or any of the handhelp units)
*Alphanumeric memory (store names and numbers from the keypad or from caller ID data)
*Headset compatible. This is great if you are cooking or doing activities involving you hands (Do get a handset)
*Very good range and clear signal. In my experience with this unit I have found no problems with clarity or range of signal. It has been quite impressive despite the fact that I placed the base next to my desktop computer.
Cons:
*2.4 Ghz. Yes, if you have wireless networking there may be interference (I don't). Plus you tend to pay extra. The 900 Mhz DSS offers pretty much the same range and security. If they had this model in 900 DSS that would have been my choice.
*Wall mounable: yes, but awful! The unit doesn't rest against the wall. The adapter to the base, so it can be on the wall, is in the back, not the bottom of the unit, so it looks like a shelf
*The speakerphone in the handset is not as terrefic as the one in the base, but it works better than other speakerphones in uniden bases tha I have owned. It is great to use it when on hold
*Somewhat pricey. The [money] rebate is quite nice though
*It doesn't have a dedicated mute key. You have to look at the screen to to activate the right multipurpose key
Bottomline: it is a phone system that is expandable, it has worked extremely well for the first 6 weeks. I give it 4.5 stars and I do recommend it.
