My Daughter I Now a Much Better Speller

Jan 8, 2002 - By MartyHansen (Los Angeles, CA USA)

I bought the Franklin MW 216 Homework Wiz Plus for my daughter, who is eight. She loves it.

My daughter's weakest subject has always been spelling. She doesn't have a lot of patience, and looking up words in a dictionary was difficult for her (especially since she didn't know how to spell the word in the firt place).

My daughter, fortunately, is into gadgets (Walkmans, Gameboys, Bop-Its, etc.) so the Franklin made spelling fun. She likes how the Franklin will greet her by name; how she can create a list of words to review (like her spelling words for the week); how it corrects the spelling even if she inputs it wrong (which is key); and how it gives her the definition and parts of speech for each word (noun, adjective, etc.) which she needs to compete her homework.

The large two-line display is easy for her to read. She likes the fun games that are included, (Hangman and Guess That Word being her favorite). She even likes how the Homework Wiz will scroll a cute picture across the screen prior to giving the definition (like a reveal), and how it even has a calculator function to help her with her evening's math problems.

The Franklin Homework Wiz Plus, being a dictionary only, is perfect for my daughter who is too young to need a thesaurus. (When the time comes, I'll graduate her up to the excellent Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus, which her older brother and I both use.)

In the meantime, she's very happy with the Franklin Homework Wiz Plus, which she utilizes every evening to do her homework -- and every week to practice her spelling, (and which several of her classmates also have and carry in their backpacks).

I don't know if the Franklin Homework Wiz was the primary reason for the improvement we've seen in her spelling. (I'd like to believe it was the weekly coaching that my wife and I have provided that did the trick.) But the Franklin certainly made spelling (and looking up words) easier and more fun. My wife and I -- and my daughter -- are all very happy.

Franklin HW 216 Homework Wiz Plus

Jan 22, 2004 - By Ellen M. (California, USA)

My ten year old daugther is making great use out of the Franklin HW 216. In the car on the way to school she can easily review her spelling words. The big display is great for easy spell checking and the hangman game helps with the spelling too. The problem with the device is that it is very difficult to get the very small philips head screw out of the battery lid so that the four AAA bateries can be installed. I ended after almost an hour of trying opitcal screw drivers having to drill out the screw with a fine drill. Franklin customer service says this is a problem that they are aware of and hope to re-design the battery compartment in the future.

What a great idea!

This compact dictionary resolves the delima of carrying a heavy dictionary back and forth to school. My son keeps the homework wix in his backpack and is able to do his homework at aftercare, home, or wherever without breaking his back. The games are really good too.

Great for kids of all ages. It consists of enough words for kids in 1st to possibly 3rd grade. Easy to use, and very helpful.

This product is great. More parents should purchase it for their children. It gives your children the independence that they desire when doing homework and also you.
