What a great device! AWESOME!

I'm suprised, why don't more companies think of this? Other than this startech speaker,i have not seen another drive bay speaker anywhere.

Again i must say this is a very cool little device. No longer do i have to fumble around clunky speakers with long wires that get tangled.Installation was easy,i just mounted it in a spare CD drive bay, hooked up the power, put in the little backplate and passed the audio jack cable to the back of my pc's audio card.It looks cool in my drive bay as well.

The sound from the little speaker is also supriseingly good and clear as well.I highly recommend this speaker. It was worth every penny.

I love this little speaker.

If you are an audiophile this speaker is not for you. For me though, the sound quality is fine. Though keep in mind that the speakers are just 1 inch in diameter, so don't expect miracles. Maximum volume lever is adequate, but not loud.

I felt the installation instructions could have been more detailed. Just 8 sentences printed on the back of the package with no illustrations.

Mounting the speaker box in my computer took about 40 minutes. I opened my Dell Dimension 2400 and removed a drive bay cover. (The Dell manual had nice instructions about adding another CD drive that helped with this.) Most CD drives have 4 screw holes in a standard position. Only two of the speaker screw holes lined up with the holes in my drive bay because the speaker is much shorter that a CD drive. Worse, the computer cover blocked access to the screws. So I installed the screws in the speaker until they were almost down flush, outside of the case and then slid the speaker into the bay. It was firm enough.

Power connection was a snap because Dell had left an extra little white power plug right there! Thank you Mr. Dell.

Then I ran the signal wire out the back of my computer and plugged it into the speaker jack of my sound card. I closed the computer case and reconnected the wires in back - done in less than an hour.

In short, I love this little speaker!! It's wonderful getting rid of the speakers, wires and power block that cluttered my desk. And the sound quality and level is all I need.

There are other drive bay speakers. The Cyber Acoustics CA 1001 for about $20 and the Thermaltake Xpeaker for $42. But I've never tried them.

Good PC speakers

I was tired of having wires all over my computer desk for speakers or knocking them off the desk when I moved papers. This really simplified everything. Using the computers power supply eliminates an ac adapter too.

It has good sound and a headphone jack. Installation is a breeze, just hook it up to a power cable for your hard drive and connect to your sound card, that's it.

Simple and effective.

How does it sound?

The fidelity of this unit is nothing to rave about but that's not why you buy it. If you need sound from your computer when your external speakers are disabled this will do the job and the unit has an audio jack and volume control that are very convenient if your computer is near you. The volume control serves not only the unit itself but whatever speakers you might plug into it. Plugging in external speakers disables the internal speakers.
