Awesome Speakers at a Budget Price :)

(5 out of 5) by Rich on May 14, 2001 (Tempe, AZ)
I have been a Guru if you will for most of my life when it comes to sound and music. I have been told as well that I have a musical ear, especially when I play the piano. I simply can not say enough good things about this speaker system. As many of you know, over the years the computer market has been flooded with every Tom, Dick ,and Harry who has recently jumped on the computer revolution bandwagon. I have known Yamaha to be a leader in the industry when it comes to the Audio industry, long before the home computer was on the scene. This system is simply another triumph for the Yamaha team. The controls are relatively easy to use. The design is flawless, except for the placement of the bass control. The sound quality is breathtaking. Clear, accurate and deep all at the same time. These speakers are the best kept secret in the industry. I put these little jewels up against systems costing 5 times as much. Any Questions, fell free to email me at ...

Quality components for an upgrade

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Mar 16, 2002
Lets start with a little background. I've been upgrading my computer piece by piece as things began to fail on it. Well my 2 piece speakers woofers went up and I couldnt hear much so anything would be an improvement over this. I am a bit of an audiophile and am accustomed to my home stereo system, so when I read all of the wonderful reviews on this product I was a bit skeptical. 30 watts didnt sound like a lot of power. I operate this system in a home office so I didnt want to kill anyone with anything in the huge wattage range, but I didnt want to sacrifice sound quality for loudness.
I was choosing between the Boston Acoustics and this Yamaha both 30 watts. For a 10 dollar price difference I didnt see anything in the BA that I liked anymore than this Yamaha. Plus I knew Yamaha is a pioneer in audio and digital music so I plunked down my cash and prayed I wasnt getting a hunk o junk.
I was first taken aback by the square subwoofer. I am accustomed to more tube style subs, so I was thinking the subwoofer would be just a giant midrange. Its NOT.
I have found a great track to test subwoofers, even if you're not into rap music, but want to see where your sound is coming from, Techmaster PEB makes a track called the Ultimate Subwoofer Test. It hits the very low range bass, and can make one shiver on an appropriate system. After figuring out how to hook this into my Sound Blaster 5.1 Live! Card I powered this baby up. Whenever I hear a subwoofer thump when I turn it on, I'm always impressed. I got the thump with this Yamaha. The instruction manual tells you to set the subwoofer at between 1 and 2. I am much more comfortable with it at 4-5 range for rich clear low range bass. You will need to tweak your EQ to these speakers as nothing out of the box ever sounds right.
Now the reason I rated this 4 stars rather than 5 is that I would like a little more "depth" to my music. Perhaps on a 5 speaker system I could get this depth, or the 80 watt Yamaha, but for the money, this is sure better than the old 2 speaker system and it is perfectly capable of standing on its own to use as a secondary audio source in your home.

I didn't expect it to be THIS good

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Aug 28, 2002
I just received these today. I must say that I was just looking to get something relatively inexpensive that sounded pretty good, nothing crazy. But....these sound REALLY good. Got em' for the office, but now i think i am going to get another set for my home - yes, they sound THAT good, and the price you just cannot beat it. The bass woofer really kicks ...!!!

Very good sound for that price...

(4 out of 5) by Marcelo A. Soto Quiroga on Sep 30, 2001 (Maracay, Venezuela)
I purchased it at a local store just for the brand. I've never read a review nor heard a word about that speakers. But I got surprised about how good it sounds.
Well balanced, nice highs and good bass considering the relatively small subwofer dimension. A little weak in medium range, but it makes no harm to general sonic performance.

Awesome Sound!

(5 out of 5) by Kevin on Jan 8, 2002 (Abbotsford, BC CAN)
I saw reviews #10 & #11, and I can't believe they're talking about the same speakers, or maybe they have a defective set. These speakers easily stand up to the Altec Lansing ones that I was comparing them to when shopping around. I don't listen to alot of music on my computer, but I thought I'd throw in a CD and see what it sounded like... wow! The bass was incredible. I was really surprised. I've always known Yamaha to be a good quality name brand. And the slim design of the satellite speakers is great if you're cramped for space on your desk. The main volume know on the front is very convenient, compared to the cheap push button ones I had before. I don't care about the bass volume knob being located on the back of the subwoofer... how often do you change the bass level anyways? The only negative thing I have to say about these speakers, is that contrary to the technical stats posted here on Amazon, this system does NOT have a headphone plug-in. But I've actually found that the speakers have a rich, full sound even at minimal listening levels, so I can do without the headphones at night. Overall these speakers rock! I can't say enough good about them.
