Thincom Modem Put My Visor Online

Sep 30, 2000 - By Derrick Story (Santa Rosa, CA USA)

The Thincom modem instantly converted my Visor from a PIM to a real computer. I can dial-up any ISP and cruise the Web just like I can with my laptop or with my "getting bigger by the day" desktop computer. It doesn't require proprietary services or costly access fees to check e-mail. I'm using the services I already have.

Thanks to its clever design, the Thincom modem seats flush with my Visor, has a petite power appetite, and weighs not much more than the Springboard back cover protector that I removed to insert the modem. I couldn't even detect that my Visor had a modem installed unless I turned it over, revealing the Card Access label.

Many people don't realize that there's more than 500k of Flash memory onboard the modem that's now accessable via the Thinmodem 1.4 update. It's a nice bonus to an already great product.

GREAT...PERFECT FIT FOR VISOR!

Sep 16, 2000 - By T. Reinhardt (east coast)

I bought this for my visor and it is a perfect fit. (The one made by handspring didnt look like you could leave it in the case while the modem was in.) The modem did come with it's own programs but I am an aol user and never set up any of them. I immediately loaded the aol program and was on aol in 3 minutes...it worked amzingly! That program allows mail, IM's, buddy list functions... It is quite good and free to aol members. This modem worked excellently with it. The cord that comes with it that plugs in to the phone jack is a good length....not long enough to get twisted and knotted but long enough so you dont have to be sitting on top of the jack. The modem was a perfect fit and can stay in when not in use. It supposedly uses "minimal" battery if left in. Visor doesn't have a rechargable battery so that may be a consideration for you...but this is a perfect little modem in the right circumstance! A+

Nice Work

Aug 14, 2000 - By KC (MN)

The people who made this were thinking. It's got a better user interface than the handspring modem, it's smaller, lighter weight, doesn't use it's own batteries, upgradable, and it works just as well. I'd definately reccommed it, and the stowaway keyboard for travelers. Plus you can get free internet access from nearly anywhere in the nation...just don't install the program they give you on your desktop or you'll regret it. Happy visor surfing.

ThinModem w/ Targus (Think Outside?) Keyboard

Nov 22, 2000 - By Michael Florez (Cincinnati, Ohio USA)

I also have a Visor Deluxe which I have used with a Targus Stowaway Keyboard. The modem connection while seated on the Stowaway Keyboard allowed me to review emails and respond to them without disconnecting either the modem or the keyboard. This combination relieved me of the burden of a laptop while traveling. Unload the prepackaged software (the email program is only a demo and requires a fee for use) and use the 500K storage for something else, which is a plus. Eudora Internet Suite is free. I received an email from technical support that the upgrade to V.90 will include fax support (the current version does not permit faxing through the ThinModem). The battery meter dips during use but restores, for the most part, after turning it off. ThinModem comes with a male telephone jack (about 36 inches) which works well in airport telephones that offer a female connection. For about $5, get the female jack (about 4 inches)which works better with connections will working at a desk. One negative is the current lack of a gadget to connect to a cell phone to turn the Visor into a wireless, but that may come, I hope.

Thinline modem works fine

Aug 30, 2000 - By J. Lowrie (Canyon Country, CA USA)

I have a Handspring VISOR Delux and just got my thincom modem. It worked just fine with my AOL for Palm software and did work with thier included applications. Only shortfall, the included apps are ALL demos and you get about 10 to 15 days to demo. Also, they are slightly confusing to work with since they require odd usernames to work even in demo mode.

But if you have mail software in your PDA or the AOl software it works like a charm.
