A good solid receiver

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 25, 2001
I can't find any serious flaws with this receiver. It has all of the basic functions that you would want for an "entry level" home theater receiver. It sounds great. The manual is sufficient.

I can only come up with 2 minor flaws: 1. On my unit the top 2 row of buttons on the remote take a fair amount of pressure to activate. 2. The receiver has a series of menus to setup items such as speaker volume level, speaker size, etc. But you can only access this menu when you have the "Tuner" selected. So if your input is set DVD and you want to make a change you have to switch over to the Tuner first. Kind of annoying

The seperate volume levels for the sub-woofer and the rear speakers are nice. Another button for the center channel would have been perfect.

I would still reccommend this receiver though.

Great performer, nice design

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Mar 19, 2001
I've had this receiver for a couple months now, and I'm very satisfied. The Philips good quality and nice clean design is very evident in this product. I like the power (100 Watts/channel) and multitude of AV hookups in the back...good for my setup of computer (music and dvd), TV, and philips Tivo machine. Setup and speaker adjustment was very easy, and the sound is very clean and powerful. Recommended!

" A Potent Receiver"

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Oct 21, 2002
This receiver is stunning.... It has raw power.... It has 5 S video inputs/outputs,and it has 2 optical inputs/outputs with options for your vinyl Lp's, satellite and more.... This receiver is a steal, hands down the best receiver for the money!!! I have shopped around I have been in Bestbuy,Circuit City,Radio Shack,Sam's Club I've even gone to department stores looking for the right receiver. I have been in numerous sound rooms and yes Harmon Kardon,Onkyo,Denon, and Yamaha do sound good but the FR975 receiver has more raw power than all the names Ive just mentioned unless you want to pay a grand or so for a few extra features and some pretty lights....Dont get me wrong just because you find a receiver for cheap, doesn't mean you should use cheap speakers.) I would still recommend high quality speakers.Your electronic equippment is as good as the quality, but sometimes you can find quality without the expense. This also an awesome upgrade from dolby surround to digital surround.(Nothing Ive seen carries the digital (DTS) signal and has the power of this receiver let alone the price of this receiver.)If you want to get crunk then crank this!!! Most underated buy for a receiver....

Satisfied with the unit except.........

I purchased this unit as an open box set at Best Buy in 2001. The receiver was in perfect condition. The only item missing was the product manual which was easily downloaded online.
I've had no qualms about this receiver up until this year when I lost sound in the left front speaker. After trouble shooting the situation I've declared that the problem lies within the speaker cable itself. The FR 975 speaker cable is cheap to say the least. I will buy new speaker cable asap hoping that the problem is quickly resolved.
I consider myself an audiophile and I must say that the OEM front speakers are excellent. I didn't know what to expect at first but let me tell you I was blown away by the quality of sound emitted through the front channels. I've made the necessary fine adjustments with aftermarket audio/video sound placement disks to direct the overall sound. I've played back DVD's, DVD-Audio, CD's and my IPOD and the crisp, clear and accurate tones between highs and lows are superb. Watching a concert on DVD is a great experience.

The only problems I have noticed is poor stagiging in the rear speakers - lack of volume too.
