Worst phone I've ever bought...

(1 out of 5) by Michael Clark on Jun 30, 2001 (Chicago, Illinois)
The Uniden EXS9966 is without a doubt the most worthless, poorly manufactured piece of junk on the market today. After trying several different phones we settled on this one- due in no small part to the glowing reports from other reviewers. What a disappointment! Within two months the sound started to go out in the handset, and the headset jack got so loose and sloppy that the headset cable would actually fall out- and the topper is the Uniden "customer care" department that tells me I can send it back- at my expense, and they will repair it- at my expense, and return it to me- at my expense, and I will only be without a phone for 4-6 weeks! Good grief! It is without a doubt the worst support I've heard in years.

Furthermore- the pricing is a stone cold [bad]. I do not blame [anyone else] for this- but the phone is now selling for one third of what I paid less than 6 months ago.

RUN- don't walk away from this disappointing and badly supported substandard unit. And I would avoid Uniden as a whole given their utter lack of support for their products.

What a bad taste this has left.

Better sound quality...

(4 out of 5) by Steven Dennis on Dec 3, 2001 (Reston, VA USA)
We bought this phone after my wife insisted that our standard Uniden 900 Mhz sound quality wasn't good enough, so we opted for the digital spread spectrum model. It's definitely an upgrade. We have the 9980 model, which has an excellent digital answering machine and one line. The battery in the phone itself is a bit weak (If you forget to hang it up it dies). My favorite factor with all of the Uniden models is that they have a very tactile feel. When you push a button, you know it, no mush. It's the only brand on the market that seems to have that feel -- sort of the way nothing used to feel like an IBM keyboard, if you know what I mean. It's also a comfortable and lightweight phone, not too small like many phones nowadays (who wants a teensy phone that has a microphone two inches from your mouth?).

All in all, I like it plenty, and it's also the top-rated cordless brand in Consumer Reports.

Enjoy!

After years of hating cordless phones, I'm happy

(4 out of 5) by Michael Avery on May 4, 2001 (Gunnison, CO United States)
I bought this phone because of it's range and sound quality. I've used a number of other cordless phones and been very disappointed.

I've had my Uniden 9966 about 3 months, and so far the only thing I can complain about is the unwieldy way you have to enter names into the memories. But that's a one-time annoyance.

The sound quality is as clear as a bell. While some people have complained about humming, so far, I haven't heard it. I picked up a cheap AT&T headset, and my hands are free, and no one complains about how I sound.

The range has been excellent - I can use the phone up to two blocks from home and the sound quality remains excellent. All around the house, even to the far edge of the back-yard, or over at neighbor's houses, just isn't a challenge to this phone.

The batteries consistently give me 4 hours of talk time. Since I'm on the phone a lot, this means I charge the batteries every night. I'd love to get more battery life, but I really can't complain about it.

An OK phone... but, be aware....

(2 out of 5) by L. F. Hunter on Nov 18, 2001
The short and the sweet.

The NiCad battery is indeed a problem, expect to replace it after 6 months, as the handset will only run for 40 or so minutes then... Say, (...) at (...) for a new battery.

The speaker phone function is fine, but not for business use. Friends, family, yes.

At the price, an OK deal. But not a steal.

Beware of 900 Mhz interference, this phone killed (via interference) my GE 900 Mhz headset phone, so if you wish (or have) another 900 Mhz phone at home, you should be carefull.

Came up short

Sleek styling, great options for the money. However, the background noise is worse than my 10 year old Panasonic which sits directly next to every electrical appliance that interfers with cordless phones.
