I like this VCR

(4 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Feb 9, 2000
This is my first vcr but it is great for the price. Since I am only 11 years old my mom set it up and she had no problems with the clock working or any other possible problems. This vcr fast forwards very quickly compared to my family's 3 year old Phillips one but that might just be from being old. My vcr taped shows on cable but you'll need to read the instructions to understand how to tape stuff. I thought that this vcr could skip commercials but I can't find the button on the remote that it gave me! I played a few movies and the picture came in like a show would. Even the shows that I taped came in great! I think that it is a good vcr for people who just want to tape and watch movies.

Great supplement to a DVD player

This is an additional comment to my previous review:

This VCR also has the best still frame picture I've seen on any VCR.

can't record cable channels > 99

(3 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 28, 2000
Bought the VCR because it was the lowest-priced one I could find that also had 4 heads, stereo, and commercial skip. Found it easy to set up and program (although it didn't auto-clock set the 1st time I tried.) However, much to my surprise, I found it impossible to record channels over 99, even though the manual shows an example with channnel 104, and the VCR is supposed to be 181-channel compatible. There's no contact # for Thonson, so I called Amazon.com,(who I bought it from--highly recommended), and they reached Thomson, who told them that the VCR couldn't record 3-digit channels. I'm debating whether or not to keep it because of that--I'm impressed with it otherwise, particularly for the price (good recording quality, playback, and stereo, easy to use, and there IS a tape counter--hit the "INFO" button to display it on the screen.) The main problem is the 3-digit channel bug--my current cable system doesn't go over channel 99, but some do, and it would be a BIG disadvantage.

Great supplement to a DVD player

Has lots of excellent features for a 90-dollar VCR. In addition to basic VCR functions, there is Commercial Advance and Movie Advance. The VCR's functions, settings, and programming are easily accessible in the on-screen menus. The picture and sound are good. It's low price is more evident in that tape insertion and rewinding are not as "smooth" as higher-end models.

Great VCR at a Great Price!

(5 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Jan 10, 2000
I have had this unit for two weeks. The picture playback quality on pre-recorded tapes is great. When hooked up to a surround sound system, the audio playback is first rate. The movie/commercial advance feature is really handy and unheard of on a unit costing less than $90. The recording quality and playback is also very good. I recorded the millenium celebrations on ABC 2000, and the playback of the Paris and London midnights was very impressive. I highly recommend this VCR to those who want good quality at a very affordable price.
