Great simple receiver that delivers great sound

(4 out of 5) by Vincent Giguere on Dec 4, 2000 (Montreal, Canada)
I've tried few japanese brands before I ended up with the Harman Kardon's HK3270 Receiver. At first, I thought 35Watts/Channel was too little, but these are real 35 Watts RMS, not High power Watts like advertised by japanese brands. It is as much if not more powerful than any 100W Jap amplifier on the market. I've tried it with 4 Cerwin vega! speakers, and even at max volume, it is still precise with no distortion (Very noisy though!!). The sound is great, the interface is extremely simple (Volume, balance, Bass, Treble and source, That's all!) No gadgets to boost you bass or to alter your sound. It's just plain simple but very efficient with lots of output power. The only problem is the tuner (It doesn't work very well! you need a big antenna or a cable connection if you want to use it.). So, if you're not looking for gadgets but only for great sound , This receiver is for you!

want a clean crisp and full sound?

(5 out of 5) by Gregory Y. Chang on Feb 19, 2008 (Irvine, CA)
I did not buy it from amazon, I bought a now 10year old HK3270, in excellent condition. I am used to clean sound from a custom amp32 (t-amp clone). It had a fantastic sound when playing in regular listening levels in my moderate size room. I love my DIY speaker (fullrange) but when I want it to sound moderately loud it would clip, especially on acoustic guitar music (of course others too). I used to have adcom, proton, and usual Japanese brand. This 10year old amplifier is more than satisfying. I read the review with 4 stars and I think it deserves more...

Well, I had the chance to hear it more, and now I hear a hum when playing rather moderately high volume. Others have noted a similar problem on this model, apparently comes from the transformer in the unit. Now I will try some simple changes (unload other components and try different outlet etc), if problem persists I will likely sell it cheap!. Rather disappointed at this stage. I will have to change to 2 stars but can't seem to change at this stage.

I had actually stashed the receiver away thinking it needs to be repaired. I set it up again exactly same and was shocked the hum is completely gone, strange, the sound is excellent, no background hum at all, strange but not complaining, back to 5 stars!!
