"Universal" is a major overstatement

(2 out of 5) by Skinny Bill on Dec 29, 1999 (Burke VA USA)
I purchased this model hoping to eliminate the need for three home theater remotes that I was constantly juggling: DVD, TV and Receiver. Well, the Jensen SC-595 operated most of my Toshiba television features, only some limited features of my Sony receiver, and did not communicate at all with my Philips/Magnavox DVD player (despite box advertisment that it would work with Philips/Maganovox dvd players).

I called Jensen customer service, who were really no help at all in getting the remote to work with my DVD player. Their analysis of the problem - your DVD player is "too new." Well, I bought the player in January of 1999.

I would advise against this model unless you confirm compatibility first.

Nice inexpensive RF/IR remote

(4 out of 5) by Steve Lee on Dec 11, 1999 (Southern California)
Remote send out IR as well as RF to the transponder which sends out IR. It controlls my Sony STR-DA555ES, Toshiba 50", Panasonic A120U, Akai and Panasonic HiFi VCRs. This remote exceeded my expectations for functionality (PiP/input/menu for TV, most functions for DVD/VCR, limited function for my receiver but sufficient). It doesn't support any LD players, but even if it did, I don't expect my old Samsung LD player to be supported.

Its RF capability doesn't seem to work very well while my old pair of pyramid IR/RF remote extenders still functions flawlessly. Though not up to my expectations, this Jensen remote's RF capability is adequate, dropping it down to 4 stars.

Other annoyances: claims to control Pro-Logic receivers but cannot on my Dolby Digital/Pro-Logic receiver; only one receiver setting can control most of my Sony's functions except the power switch, I had to use AUX2 with a different code that can only turn the receiver on or off. It's not perfect, but it's the best I own for the price range. It's much more functional than my other programmable/learning remotes. I do recommend it.

Works exactly as I had hoped - great product

(5 out of 5) by Geoff MacKenzie on Dec 31, 1999 (Lake Villa, IL)
This remote controls my TV, ProLogic reciever, VCR, and satelight dish. All work perfectly. I don't have much to say about it other than it worked just like I wanted it to. I can control my satelight from any room in the house and I'm happy.

Get a Sony!

(3 out of 5) by Amazon Customer on Dec 19, 1999
Probably good for simple setups but if ya want something thatis completely customizable, and can learn different codes, get thesony touchscreen remote. It controls up to 12 different components on a wonderful backlit touchscreen display. Much better value than Philips remote...

Works perfectly for me

(5 out of 5) by Peter Kim on Feb 15, 2000 (Palatine, IL)
Given some of the reviews, I was initially hesitant about purchasing this. However, it's working like a charm. I have a 1 receiver DirecTV setup with the receiver located in my family room, and then a second TV in our bedroom also wired to the receiver. The receiver came with an infered remote control, so I couldn't change channels on the dish from my bedroom without the direct line of sight. But, I can with no problems with this Jensen. Also, it controls my 15 year old Sony TV like a charm. It works perfectly for my requirements.
