I bought the Advent 770 after going to Best Buy and trying on the various models they had there. I found this model to be the most comfortable at the store so I bought them from Amazon. I wear them at work for hours at a time and even though I wear glasses, I am always comfortable. Other headphones I have worn compress my ears too much--but this set does not. (A did not like a Sony wireless headphone for that reason.)
There is some adjustment of the controls (to match the frequency of the base and the headphones) needed, but it does not bother me. It is very similar to changing channels on a cordless phone, only it is an analog dial.
I am very happy with the product and I am considering buying a second pair for home use.
A good balance of price, performance and features
I went from a pair of Sony Studio headphones MDR-V6, which recently bit the dust, to these Advent AW770 wireless headphones. Considering that the price for each was roughly $100, I expected to lose some quality and performance to gain wireless flexibility. As far as the sound quality goes, they definitely do not match the range and clarity of the Sony headphones, but I would consider it better than average. It is an acceptable trade off, a little bit lesser sound quality, for the ability to walk around the house with your headphones on. The manual claims that they work up to 300 feet away (the length of a football field). In actuality, it was more like 75 feet though a few walls. I could easily walk all around my townhouse & about 20 feet outside before they started to get a bit fuzzy. All in all, I would consider these to be a good buy.
A solid product but could have been better
These headphones are a decent wirless solution but are a tale of two realities.
Reality 1 - When charged and properly tuned, they sound great; rich bass and full mid range with good highs. Their range is excellent - I have listened to music for 3-4 hours about 100 feet from the base. They are adjustable and accomodate different size heads easily.
Reality 2 - The challenge of keeping them tuned and charged is not always easily accomplished. The battery setup and charging arrangement could have been done significantly better. Also unless you want to be adjusting the levels alot you need a fixed level signal. Additionally since the frequency reception is quite contingent upon battery strength, if you don't have the time or means to keep the battery charged to certain levels your performance suffers.
Since I am a bit of a techno geek being mindful of charging and frequency adjustment is not a big deal, but others (like my wife) will find it a hassle.
Sounds fairly good, lightweight, not bad.
Simple to install, and sounds fairly good. Range is adequate for my modest tract home & yard (which never takes me more than 200 feet from the base.) I sometimes get a little static when I sit back in the easy chair (metal springs?) I was used to a heavier closed headset, so I was pleased with the lighter weight of this closed headphone.
I was mostly interested in isolation from unwanted background noise while watching TV or listening to CDs. The closed earpieces provide just acceptable isolation from outside noise.
The built-in nicad recharger is a little slow (needs 12+ hours to lay in a full charge), but assuming you only need them 6 hours a day, it should suffice.
A solid product at an attractive price
My primary motivation for purchasing wireless headphones was to permit me to listen to music or television programming while on my exercise bike at home. Because acoustic isolation was desirable, I preferred a closed cup headphone design that would block much ambient sound. I have been quite pleased with the Advent AW770 headphones. They do, indeed, isolate me from most ambient noise, which is ideal for listening to music or television while exercising--without having to turn the volume up to ear-splitting levels. (Of course, this is highly undesirable if you need to be able to easily hear a baby crying from a distant room in your home.)
My stereo and exercise bike are in my finished basement, and I get acceptable audio quality throughout my house, in spite of having the transmitter below ground level. While the range and audio quality are good, the headphones do crackle from varying signal strength and interference as I walk across the house. There is also a very noticeable--but not unbearable--amount of background hiss from the built-in amplifier. If you listen to pop music, most country, blues, or classic rock, the hiss will not be noticeable most of the time; however, you may find it distracting if you are a classical music fan, as the hiss becomes more conspicuous during quiet passages.
I have been perfectly satisfied with the overall sound quality of the headphones. I ended up choosing to use a monitor output on my stereo receiver, since I found no need to alter the signal (e.g., add bass or otherwise tweak the frequency response). Using a fixed-level audio output is desirable, since you must calibrate the transmitter for the audio source's output level for maximum performace and to avoid distorted sound. This becomes much more difficult if the phones are connected to a TV or stereo headphone jack, which puts out varying amounts of signal. Lest you worry, the product includes nearly every conceivable connector and adaptor cable one could possibly need for virtually any hook-up scenario.
Finally, I have been impressed with battery life. The included rechargeables last 5-6 hours. I know this not from exercising in my basement for 6 hours at a time; rather, I have enjoyed having the headphones and their good sound quality so much that I have been wearing them when I study. Since my exams are this week and the next, I've spent many hours with them clamped over my head!
