Fire your cable company now!
If a clear signal and and quality sound is watch you are looking for, look no more. With access to 100+ PPV movies, Sports packages, etc. All broadcast clearer and sharper than your local cable co can offer without doubling your bill. Purchase a powered rabbit ear or digital antenna to get HDTV or analog local. I have had system for 3 years and have only experienced an outage once (for about 2 minutes). Cable can't compare.

I do Tech Support for DirecTV
I have one word for you...Sony! RCA receivers are littered with software glitches that cause an infinite number of problems. If you do want to by DirecTV, do NOT even CONSIDER RCA or Hughes. Buy Sony!
Who cares if it rains- or snows
We've had Direct TV since very near its beginning. I agree with the DTV troubleshooter that Sony has fewer problems but we have both RCA and SONY and though I like the Sony better I can't say I'd recommend against the RCA. I say go to the store or a friends and try them both. DTV is great. In more than five years we've lost the signal twice for more than a second or two. We had cable for years and it failed us FAR more often than DTV's signal does. Just a couple of hints. 1) It isn't necessary to have a professional installer but for free, you are crazy not to. I've seen several self installs that claimed the signal "went out" a lot that were aimed poorly enough to get a signal strength of 30 or so. I can usually get 90 or more. But if you aren't patient and steady don't do it yourself. 2) Put the dish low enough that you can knock snow off if you live where that's a problem. Remember above I mentioned loosing signal twice- snow build-up. Now my dish is at eye level. THEN it was on the roof and not everyone has their house set up to clip in- it was still scary! Go ahead. Get cable. DTV is not perfect but neither is electric, water, trash pick up, etc. As to the "no answer" at DTV that was when the big buy out of another service happened and during restructuring they really did get behind in calls. But, hey. They said they were sorry. They took care of every complaint I had. They did NOT complain when my phone jack went bad and they couldn't get ME for three months (I found it myself). I only wish my computer worked so well- ANY OF THEM!
